Best Buy is set to discontinue physical media sales such as DVDs and Blu-rays in its stores, reports The Verge. This move symbolizes a significant shift in consumer behavior, steering away from physical media ownership towards a landscape dominated by digital formats and streaming platforms. The transition, aligning with broader industry tendencies, is slated to commence as early as the first quarter of 2024.

Any thoughts on this? I think this is another sign of physical media slowly going away unfortunately :(.

Physical media’s become more niche as the days go by, and stores like Best Buy are a reflection of the general consumer’s disinterest in it.

This causes people to either overpay at specialty stores, or solely go online.

I get weird looks at work from my coworkers that I still buy physical media, but most of my purchases are online due to stores not catering to my taste in media.

I read this a while ago, not surprised for a big store.

It looks like Bestbuy can't make enough money from physical media like Blu-Ray, so Bestbuy decide to no longer sell disc movies anymore.

I feel more people go to Amazon, eBay, Walmart, and specialty movie stores to buy DVD and Blu-ray movie disc, or they borrow disc movie for free from their local library.

With supply chains stocking stuff for a vast lot of people, you are better off getting niche or physical media to your house instead.

I’ve got niche tastes in hobbies, so I’ve resigned myself to primarily getting that stuff online.

You essentially have to be lucky to live in a major city that has that one specialty store that actually carries that stuff.

It’s almost a shock when you find that one store that actually carries things like that.

We buy CDs & DVDs from garage sales. Download them then resell in our own sale. Cheaper that way than to buy new.
I can understand why they are discontinuing this as a business has to go with their profit margins.

I feel Bestbuy will mostly sell bigger sized products like refridgerators, air conditioners, clothe washers and dryers, and won't sell as many small size products like DVDs and Blu-Rays which more people buy from online stores like Amazon or discount stores like Walmart, Dollar stores, and thrift stores.
