BMW imagines a future where no one has to choose—changing the color of your car can happen in an instant by leveraging the same low-power screen technology that ebook readers use.

Calling the customized BMW iX Flow the company revealed at CES 2022 today a giant rolling Amazon Kindle isn’t entirely accurate. For starters, it doesn’t have access to the Amazon online ebook store, nor does it have a soft glowing backlight making the vehicle stand out in a crowded parking lot at night. It does, however, feature an outer wrap made from E Ink’s electronic paper display technology, which uses tiny microcapsules of colored ink that rise or sink to change their visibility and produce specific colors, as well as complicated patterns and designs, almost instantly.

I feel BMW color changing feature could be good for people who share their car with people who don't want to drive a car because of its color like pink, purple, yellow, etc. Used car dealers may also like this feature because I read on a blog that many people prefer car colors like white, black, and silver, so changing the color of the car may make it easier to sell for a higher price.

I think the comment about the Kindle is the way the color is displayed on the outside as it doesn't really need power for it to change but that may be possible. It is really neat and creative however it would show dirt and bird stains easily. Imagine trying to wash the car but having trouble finding dirt. Also would be expensive to replace the body of it if damaged.

I feel a e-ink screen based car which can display custom text, and pictures may not be a very good idea because a hacker can find a way to hack the screen, and have it display unwanted content like the driver's home address, phone number, or an offensive image or racist word which can get the driver arrested and charged with racism.

Police impersonators may change the car's colors of their car to look like a local police car, and add the word "Police" to the car's body, and impersonate a police car, so they can pull people over, and trick people into giving them their wallet, and latter change the color of their car, so they can hide more easily from the real police.

I could see someone wanting a Playboy cover on it, other stuff relating to it because that's what real car guys like while they are working on them. I doubt the police would use that model of car but maybe somewhere in the world they would try it to get away with something.

That's pretty cool actually. The repair bill when something goes wrong will be absurd though

The new feature which BMW Introduced is simply super on cars. Their is no need being selective of colors, it's simply at fixed random motion.

So you want to know where my mind went? Criminals could use this to get away from authorities. Not sure if this is technology feature I'd push for myself but hey it's innovation - kudos to BMW.

You'd think they'd just read the license plate and have a cute little remote to change everything on the outside turn white. If it has GPS or something in the computer like truckers do then still doesn't sound like a big advantage for criminals unless every car in a certain location was this one which is unlikely.
