Stuck on a boss or mini boss in Luigi's Mansion 2/Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon? Need to know how to kill that spider in the first mansion (like the numerous others who've asked the same question)? Well now you're in luck, since here's my guide to defeating all the game's bosses and mini bosses.

Oh, and yes there are spoilers. But the guide is written so that each boss/mini boss is covered in the exact order you encounter them, so if you don't want to spoil what happens later, just stop reading after the boss/mini boss you're currently facing.

Gloomy Manor

Poltergeist/Boffin

HP: 50

lmdmdecart11.jpg

The first mini boss in the game, this mysterious character is responsible for the ominous music coming from the Library.

He's also an incredibly easy 'boss'. So how do you catch him?

Just look for where the books are moving and blast your Strobulb in that general direction. Or just blast it randomly around the room, he's not particularly well hidden and he's got two clones you also have to suck up. Once you've caught one of them in the Poltergust 5000's grip, just defeat him like any other ghost, he doesn't really break free very easily and can be quite easily sucked up in one go if you don't get hit by any flying books.

Just catch him and his two copies to win the battle.

Grouchy Possessor (giant spider boss)

HP: ∞ (infinite)

LMDM-Spider_Sprite.png
[attachment=1230:GrouchyPossessor.jpg]

Possibly the most technically impressive first boss in a Nintendo game made within the last ten years or so, the Grouchy Possessor is a giant white ghost that controls the body of a giant spider during its boss battle.

This battle is split into three phases each with their own method of hurting the spider and revealing the Grouchy Possessor.

For the first phase, you have to go near the spider and Strobulb it's face to stun it, then pick up a web ball found nearby. Take this back to a suit of armour with a flaming axe to set it on fire, and the Possessor should be revealed after the spider is sent flying by the fiery explosion.

Now, a Possessor is not like a normal ghost in how you defeat it. No, instead of having HP like the mini bosses or King Boo do, these guys have what's technically 'infinite' health, meaning that you can only damage them with electric shocks from a charged A Pull Meter. So first dodge his attacks, then when he's stunned strobe him and start pulling him into the Poltergust. Charge out the bar, and when it's full press A to shock him and pull off one layer of his suit/skin, causing him to change colour.

The next phase then starts. Here, first spin the fan attached to a ball of brown spider silk to make it spin around and ignite some more web further up, freeing some armour which can then jab outwards with its weapon. You then need to go up to the spider as before, stun it with the Strobulb and pull back the spider silk nearby so it gets stuck on the lance of the impaling suit of armour. Then, spin the silk attached to the ceiling around so this silk is set on fire, which will reveal the Possessor again. Damage him as before.

Finally, you're on the last hit and in the last phase. There's now a movable ball of silk next to the spider, so pick it up and go back to the start of the room with it. You can ignite it and bring it back to the spider to ignite a web to the left that hides another suit of armour. This one has a torch, so just pull back the usual ball of spider web near the giant spider so it touches the torch to knock down the spider again and reveal the Grouchy Possessor for the final time. Suck it into the Poltergust 5000, and the battle is over!

Haunted Towers

The Three Sisters

HP: 300 (overall)

Herlinda: 150 HP

Belinda: 100 HP

Lucinda/Melinda: 50 HP

threesistersghosts-300x159.jpg

Potentially the first mini boss you may actually have trouble with (and quite possibly the last too), the Three Sisters are fought in the third mission of Haunted Towers (the one aptly called 'Graveyard Shift').

As far as the battle goes, it works as follows. All three ghosts will appear round you and start circling. Then, one will lower/move the mirror they're holding, at which point you can blast said sister with the Strobulb and suck them up with the Poltergust 5000. Think of it as a bit like the Poe Sister fights from Ocarina of Time.

Of course, it's a bit more difficult than it sounds, since hitting the wrong ghost will lead to one of the others lunging at Luigi and sending him flying. And while you're being dragged around the graveyard like a lunatic trying to suck up one of them, the other two are trying to knock poor Luigi out to make him lose grip.

So for advice, I'd say heed the following:

1. Try and capture the weaker sisters first if possible, since the less ghosts you have attacking at once, the less chance you'll have of getting knocked down while capturing the others.

2. When you've captured/failed to capture one, a crow will fly across the graveyard. Flash it with the Strobulb for a healing heart or potentially useful item.

You should eventually get this boss, it just takes some time, patience and skill at avoiding attacks. If you still have trouble, you can always go get the Super Poltergust (upgrade which doubles you suction power). That makes these ghosts a piece of cake.

Harsh Possessor (the staircase boss)

HP: ∞ (infinite)

[attachment=1234:Stairboss.jpg][attachment=1231:HarshPossessor.jpg]

A complete joke of a boss which is nowhere near as tough as the first one or mini boss in the same level, the Harsh Possessor is best seen as a nice 'break' after the aggravating as hell staircase run.

The main attack this thing has is to leap into the air and coming crash down to the ground. This is extremely easy to dodge, just stay away from the shadow/direction the boss is going and keep moving.

After three or so slams, he'll then drop his 'tongue', which you have to pull back with the Poltergust like a carpet tassle or chord. This will draw the Possessor away from the staircase.

Then all you need to do is dodge two lunges in your general direction, then flash him with the Strobulb and suck away at the boss to do damage (remember that you need to use an electric shock when the A Pull meter is full to do damage).

He'll then repossess the staircase, and the pattern repeats to mostly the same degree. Dodge jumps, dodge a few flames he spits, pull on tongue, attack Possessor, repeat. It's not a hard boss in any sense of the word and goes down in under a minute or so.

Old Clockworks

Ancient Poltergeist/Boffin

HP: 100

[attachment=1224:AncientPoltergeist.png]

Another Poltergeist/Boffin, you may have realised by now that these guys tend to act as the mini bosses in 90% of the game's mansions. However, the Ancient/Elder one is a tad tougher and controls sand/wind instead of books.

His first attack is to create a tornado that sucks Luigi to the centre of the arena. Not hard to avoid, just stay on the outside to get away from it.

He also chucks bombs and rubble at wherever Luigi is standing, which can easily be dodged just by waiting for it to fly into the air and running to a different location.

To catch him, what you need to do is use your Strobe Light on the centre of the arena, then suck him in with the Poltergust as normal. It's not particularly hard to do (and you can use the Dark Light to find where he is in the room), but he will send out Sneakers that'll try and break your hold by either scaring or physically trying to hit you.

So either keep trying and catch him and avoid the enemy Sneakers as best as possible (not recommended), or catch the Sneakers first and then go after the Elder/Ancient Poltergeist/Boffin. Probably best to do the latter given that this battle doesn't end until all the enemies he summons are dead too.

It's not a difficult battle in the slightest, and you should be done with it pretty quickly.

Overset Possessor (the clock boss/battle)

HP: ∞ (infinite)

[attachment=1229:clock.jpg][attachment=1233:OversetPossessor.jpg]

Not really a single enemy as much as a boss rush, this is the 'infamous' clock hand battle that certain people found a bit annoying.

Honestly though, it's not actually that bad and is actually pretty damn fun to play. You see, every time you defeat the enemies, the hands move on an hour. Then another set come out. Etc. Here are all the times and what enemies you face in each:

One O'clock: One Greenie appears. Not difficult to defeat obviously.

Two O'clock: Three Greenies appear.

Three O'clock: Five Greenies appear. These hours are fairly easy to deal with.

Four O'clock: Two Slammers appear. Getting a bit more tricky now.

Five O'clock: Bugs appear. Strobe them to kill them in one hit each.

Six O'clock: Three Sneakers. Best to try and get them all at once.

Seven O'clock: Three Greenies with hammers and shields. Dodge their attack, hit them with the Strobulb after. If it helps, you don't have to suck them all up immediately, just get them all to drop their weapons first.

Eight O'clock: Three Mummies. You know the drill, hit 'em with a Strobe blast, make them run into a wall, unwrap them to reveal a Greenie and catch it like normal.

Nine O'clock: Fifteen Bugs. Strobe them quickly.

Ten O'clock: Four Creepers. You can either use the Poltergust or Dark Light to make them appear, then suck them up as normal.

Eleven O'clock: Ten Bombs. Strobe them, run like mad and don't stop.

Twelve O'clock: A Greenie, some bombs, bugs, a Slammer, a Sneaker and one armed Greenie. Yeah, combo time. Try and disarm the Greenie with hammer and shield first, then catch as many of the ghosts in one go as possible.

Now, the Possessor will come out every four hours. Once he does, you probably know the drill by now. Just dodge him when he charges, then after he's a bit dazed, use the Strobulb to blast him.

Just follow the above pattern, catch the Possessor after every four hours and for the love of God, stay out the way of the clock hands in the centre of the arena as you have the potential to hurt you. You can also supposedly use the Poltergust on them to turn back the clock, but I never needed this myself.

Secret Mine

Strong/Super Enemies (Greenie, Slammer and Gobber)

Strong Greenie: 100 HP, Strong Slammer: 250 HP and Strong Gobber: 300 HP

Honestly, there's not much advice to give about these guys, they're just more powerful versions of normal enemies and have no difference in general behaviour. So just do what you did to defeat their weaker versions, especially given that most of these are fought on their own.

Shrewd/Scornful Possessor (the ice boss)

HP: ∞ (infinite)

[attachment=1232:IceFace.jpg]
ShrewdPossessor-300x179.jpg

Remember that very short section in the Secret Mine where you had to launch flaming rocks out a machine to melt ice and ride moving poles across a gap? Well this boss battle is literally the one other place in the game that those awkward game mechanics are ever used, and as a result is one of the least liked boss battles in the entire game.

Put simply, it's a rail shooter. Or even more accurately, a very strange cross between a rail shooter and a bobsled run through an abandoned mineshaft.

So I'll try and explain how to win in this boss battle, even if the actual experience was one of the miserable ones in the game and it's the one battle I plan to put off replaying for as long as possible.

What you need to do is shoot down the ice panels covering the boss' 'face'. To do this, you have to launch bombs at them to blow them up.

This is much harder than it seems however, since these bombs are both affected by gravity and kind of slow, so you have to aim quite a bit in front of the panel you want to destroy, and compensate for the arc movement as the bomb flies through the air at the same time. And the boss can also regenerate these ice panels if you take too long.

You may have also noticed a small gauge on the right of the screen. This is basically a 'temperature gauge', and it goes up the more bombs you throw/the quicker you throw them (and goes down over time). If it maxes out, that's it. Instant Game Over there on the spot.

So yes, you need to shoot down all the panels, at which point the Scornful/Shrewd Possessor will charge. Now, you need to shoot a bomb into his mouth before he reaches you to reveal his 'true' form and begin the next stage of the battle.

If you fail this and he reaches you... well, your machine massively overheats and you end up getting Game Over.

Once his 'real' form has been revealed, you then land in an ice arena and have to dodge his charges like any other Possessor. Nothing out the ordinary here, although he does use portals when attacking rather than just turning around. Hit him with the Strobulb when he stops, then suck him in to make him change colour.

Cue the bomb sleigh ride again. Same drill as before, so do that again to make the Possessor fight you manually again. Just do these two phases now until he finally loses.

Treacherous Mansion

Strong Poltergeist/Boffin

HP: 300

[attachment=1225:StrongPoltergeist.jpg]

Yes, it's another one of these guys. Except you know, he's been powered up by those magic crystals and has somehow escaped inside the display in the space exhibit.

I know, the fact you look through a telescope and end up fighting on what looks like a planet's rings in space makes no sense. But let's just ignore it for a bit and get to the boss battle, okay?

Basically, he starts off by flying around and launching stars in your direction. So look around for a shaking star (that's about to be tossed in your general direction) and aim that way with the Strobulb to stun him, sucking him in as normal.

However, there's a very good (not sure if 100%) chance he'll escape, after which something quite... cool and rather strange happens.

The planet you're on spins around and bombs start flying out from the middle of it! Dodge the array of explosives being flung in all directions, blast down any flying bugs that pop out from absolutely nowhere and go hunt down the Poltergeist among the stars again.

And there's pretty much all there is to this battle. If you need help healing or are in trouble, just blast away the bugs with the Strobulb when they appear and take their dropped items. And as for the bombs, relax, they don't cover most of the arena and give you plenty of room to dodge. Not to mention their explosion radius is much smaller than you'd think.

Big Boo

HP: ? (made of ten Boos)

[attachment=1228:BigBoo.jpg]

Boolossus in all but name, this boss is basically one big throwback to the original Luigi's Mansion. Here's how you defeat him.

First of all, he'll either do one of the three things:

1. Charge at you normally.

2. Jump/bounce around trying to crush you

3. Dive into the ground, come up halfway and charge from a portal.

What you need to do is manipulate him into hitting the drill on the front of the train moving around the arena. So if he bounces around, just dodge him until he gets tired, pull back on his tongue and fling him into the front of the train.

If he goes into the ground, stand in front of where the train is heading and quickly dodge out the way, which should cause him to hit the drill at the front on his own.

If he charges, do what you did in point 2, although it's kind of hard to line up properly.

Either way, once he hits the front of the train, he'll pop and explode into a bunch of smaller Boos. Now, what you need to do is grab the tongues of as many Boos as possible, and launch them into the train cars as it heads around the track. This will trap/lock them in and take them out the fight, causing the Big Boo to be smaller when he reforms.

After this, the Boos will turn invisible and charge at you. Now, shine your Dark Light around to make them reappear, then launch a few more in the train cars. Of course, you still have to dodge the charging Boos (their charge is based on your initial position, so if you move literally an inch after they begin to attack you'll dodge effortlessly), so avoid that while launching as many as possible. After five or so charges, the Big Boo will reform.

And then you just repeat the process. Dodge attack, make him hit the train, launch Boos into cars/carriages, repeat. Once he's down to one he won't even become a Big Boo, he'll just charge at you. When this happens, just dodge out the way as he heads towards a train car to lock him in and end the battle.

Tough Possessor (the knight)

HP: ∞ (infinite)

[attachment=1227:ToughPossessor.png][attachment=1226:ToughPossessormain.png]

The final Possessor of the game, this one is actually both a pretty cool boss battle and nowhere near as ridiculous as the ice one with the sleigh.

To start, he splits into multiple ghosts and takes over the suits of armour around the room, which then try and kill Luigi with their weapons. So how do you get him vulnerable? Just lure all the attacking knights/armour onto a rug and pull it away from under their feet, like you did in the first knight battle in the Treacherous Mansion Ceremonial Chamber! This will drive the Possessor out the armour, and cause his clones to all recombine into one again.

Now, just dodge him like you did the other Possessors, strobe him and suck him in.

Repeat this pattern once more, and then something very interesting happens...

Cue the gigantic fifty foot suit of armour/knight that steps over the wall and starts trying to crush you with a massive sword!

This form has to be beaten in a different way. So what you need to do is to get one of his feet to step onto each of the rugs (you can move around by a foot to make it try and crush you, then lure it to stamping on the rug), and then pull each of the rugs away under the knight's feet. This will cause him to fly backwards and come crashing to the floor, at which point the Possessor is driven out and fights like he did before. Just dodge his attacks, hit him with the Strobulb and suck him up to win the battle!

P.S. If you need hearts, various mice will run across the floor. Hit them with the Strobulb to make them explode into either hearts or spare change.

King Boo (final boss)

HP: 100 (each phase), 300 (overall)

LuigisMansionDarkMoonArt3-300x300.jpg

Wow, bet you didn't expect to be fighting King Boo RIGHT after beating the Tough Possessor, did you? Thankfully the game fully heals Luigi before the fight and gives you enough hearts in the chase sequence to make up for any possible annoyances from not having a checkpoint.

The first phase here is pretty simple. You're in a glowing arena in a new dimension, and King Boo tries to pound into the ground. This will cause spike balls to appear and roll away into the walls.

So what you need to do now is avoid King Boo as he slams into the floor again, which will bounce the spike balls high into the air.

You'll then see their shadows appear, so lure King Boo under one, then hold your flashlight on him to make him stop moving. The spike ball will hit King Boo and knock him out, so now just go and suck him up with the Poltergust 5000.

It'll probably take more than one round of this before his health is 'gone', but it's not particularly difficult yet.

But then, you end up seeing Luigi slide into a mansion corridor! This is a chase scene, with King Boo behind you all the way.

Just avoid everything in your path. Tables and chests of drawers wil appear, sand will appear on the floor to slow you down, there'll be columns littered around, just stay clear and don't stop moving. When you come to a circular pad, use it to bounce over the nearby barriers. Avoid anything generate by the purple lightning bolts. Grab as many hearts and gold bars as you think you can manage. It's not a difficult chase thankfully, and King Boo does 'only' take away 20 damage per hit, so you can mess up once or twice.

Eventually, you'll be launched into a second arena.

For the most part, this is the same as the first phase. However, King Boo will first start off by blasting lighting bolts across much of the arena, so don't stand on any 'lit' panels while this is going on (these mark where the lightning will hit). He'll also lunge at you a bit, although it's slow and easy to avoid.

Again, lure him under a spike ball once they appear/fly into the air, and suck him into the Poltergust again. You know the drill by now.

After you deplete his next round of health, another corridor chase sequence begins! This one is similar to before, except you've got to avoid suits of armour striking with their weapons, objects in dark areas only briefly lit by the lightning in the background and icy floors to boot. It's easier than it sounds.

Eventually, you'll be flung into another arena.

This time, King Boo shoots lightning across the whole battlefield. However, one tile won't be lit each time, so stand there to avoid the blasts.

He'll do this four times before directly coming into the arena and attacking manually.

With the exception of a few new 'danger' tiles on the floor which either act like ice or spikes, this phase is much the same as the last two. So lure him under the falling spike balls to stun him, then suck him up with the Poltergust 5000 to do damage!

He'll also randomly go to the background and shoot lightning again, dodge it like you did before.

It's not a particularly difficult final boss, so just keep going and repeat the usual pattern until King Boo goes down for good. Then enjoy the ending and credits!

To anyone ranting about spoilers, it's a walkthrough. What do you expect?

Also, anyone who complains any more will just be thrown out,

Added a new tip for the Big Boo boss. Once the Boos wake up and start charging you, you can stun them with the Dark Light and continue to launch them at the train. Didn't know this for a long, long while.
