Gaming's lastest fatality comes in the form of a 12-year-old Thai boy who killed himself after his father banned him from playing videogames. The sixth-grader, name withheld, was announced dead at Muang Samut Prakan Hospital.
The boy lived near Bangkok, and was apparently an avid gamer.
It appears that the boy, while at school, climbed to the sixth floor balcony of a computer classroom and jumped to his death.
He had texted friends the night before, saying he felt bad about his father scolding him and banning him from playing computer games. He had written "tomorrow is my last day."
School director Srisakul Kritsanajinda said the boy was tidy and doing moderately well in class, with no signs that would have caused concern.
Dr Panpimol Lohtrakul, director of the Rajanukul Institute's Mental Health Department, said that a total ban on computer games, forcing a child to quit the activity cold turkey, could result in high pressure and the risk of suicide.
She advised that parents should instead enforce limits on gaming time, and encourage children to participate in other activities.
