As reported by The Verge, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new bill that will forbid digital storefronts from using terms like “buy,” unless customers are explicitly warned that they are paying for a license to a game which may expire at any time.

“As retailers continue to pivot away from selling physical media, the need for consumer protections on the purchase of digital media has become increasingly more important,” California Assembly member Jacqui Irwin said in a statement.

“I thank the Governor for signing AB 2426, ensuring the false and deceptive advertising from sellers of digital media incorrectly telling consumers they own their purchases becomes a thing of the past.”

Several high-profile companies have taken games entirely offline in recent years, leading many players to question the legality of removing access to games that people have paid for.

Man he's really focusing on the "important" issues isnt he.

Not a bad change I guess, but realistically how many people are not going to buy games after this?

I think this is a good change. I think more people may buy the physical version of games if there is a physical game, or play PC games where you can save the game installer file to your computer, and install the game without the need for the internet to sign-into the game to play the offline story.

This isn't going to put people off buying games. I'm fairly certain most people understand the risks and will just do it anyway.

Doesn't Cali tend to lead and others follow? If it is established there you may see it implemented in other states too.

This is what they are doing instead of having an insane cost of living problem, as well as homelessness. So it might just be as simple as saying subscription instead. It's a non-issue rule.

Oh that's a good point I never thought of that. Companies that do that want to have their cake and eat it too.

It's a simple situation but simple situations don't allow for faux-outrage about non-issues.
It's insulting to assume grown people should be unable to tell the difference without this amended change.

Ever work retail?
Still have. But do you see those people buying games in California from a digital storefront?

Digital-only games are still available in retail, too, but some people don't know there's a code in some cases. So there's still a suit to be had there.

True, should at least get a disk.
