General Plot in Brief
Welcome to war, solider. You take command of two soldiers in the thick of it and attempt to win the war. Plot twists will ensure
Graphics: 5/5
Well, what can I say, the graphics on this game are beautiful. The expression on Captian Price’s face, for example, excels those saw even in Bioshock, in some cases. The maps are also beautifully constructed and it gives you a sense that you are actually there fighting that war. Your completely engrossed. All the areas you visit show the signs of what war has done (like crumbled away walls, for example). Sure, the graphics sometimes don’t look that realistic, but when was a game made for realism?
Sound: 5/5
You know, CoD 4 is just your typical, run of the mill war game in terms of sounds. You won’t hear anything you haven’t heard before. However, the quality of the voice acting is what really boosts the score. These, combined with the graphics, make you feel like you’re actually there fighting. It actually helps set the story and move it along nicely.
When you’re getting shot at, you can hear the bullets penetrating you. Should you survive this onslaught, you will hear your heartbeat and breathing. It’s these elements that help to make the game for me. This feels like its authentic just from the sounds that I hear.
Now, multiplayer. You will always hear some form of dialogue, ranging from the beginning of the round where you will hear a representative of your team ordering you to the glorious sounds of “helicopter†and “approachingâ€. It will always be done in a dramatic fashion, even though you will get sick of hearing it eventually.
Gameplay: 5/5
Oh yes, the gameplay. This is the best gameplay that I have seen for a long time. The frame rate is so smooth and the gameplay is so fast paced that you won’t get a chance to stop for a minute. Lets start by talking about the single player. In Single player, you get to control two characters, one from the SAS, and one from the US Marines, and battle against an enemy that stares death in the face and says “Welcome me with open armsâ€.
The sheer amount of enemies that you encounter would normally be too overwhelming for a crack squad to take down but, this being Call of Duty, these seem no problem at all.......at the lowest difficulty. It seems the highest difficulty, veteran, cracks up the enemies so much that 4 bullets from them is enough to take you down. On one particular mission, you fight though a horde of enemies, make it to the top, only then to be slapped with a time limit and forcing you back down the hill, where the enemies will constantly advance towards your position. This is when Call of Duty gets hard.
This is a game in which you can expect to die a lot. If you can survive, on veteran, all the way though at least 4 missions, then you can consider yourself as a great player, well done you!.
Let’s move onto multiplayer now, and let’s just say that the game really excels here. If it wasn’t enough with the single player, they decided to throw in the multiplayer. As soon as you begin your online career, you will notice that you have a number next to your name. CoD 4 ultilises a RPG type system in which when you gain a certain amount of experience, you level up to the next tier of army promotion. Promotion does have it benefits, mind, like gaining new weapons and challenges.
Speaking of challenges, you get rewarded for accomplishing feats (like getting 25 headshots with a particular weapon, for example), maybe as a soother to the fact that achievement whores can’t earn achievements online. Killing a certain amount of times will net you attachments for the weapon you got the kills for. The red dot laser sight is possibly the most useful attachment you will get for any non heavy or sniper. Your starter weapons will serve you well throughout your online career and you will possibly not change weapons at all. Your starter weapons are considered by many to be the most powerful weapons in the game (Apart from the Barret .50 cal, stupidly powerful, but gained later on).
Ok, now on to the features of multiplayer. Managing to get 3 kills in a row nets you a UAV to use. This is a very useful piece of equipment that will help you and your team. It basically shows your enemies on your minimap, allowing people that have managed to get an airstrike (5 kills in a row) to accurately pinpoint the location to place it. Netting 7 kills in a row gets you the helicopter, your ultimate friend....sometimes. For some reason, the helicopter sometimes kills everyone that it sees, making your kill streak get higher and higher (I’ve managed to get 29 kills in a row, as a result) but sometimes, it seems to decide that it’ll fly around aimlessly and sometimes decide to kill someone. Of course, your hard work could evaporate in an instant should someone shoot down the helicopter, but thats the life of this game.
Call of Duty 4 also includes a feature that they decided to call “perksâ€. As you climb the levels, you will gain new perks for you to use. You are most likely to use Stopping Power and Deep Impact, the ones you have access too from the start, all the time, as they seem to be the most useful. However, you will gain other useful perks depending on what you want to be. UAV Jammer could be useful for all you budding ninjas out there and Eavesdropper could be useful for clan matches, you can hear their voice chat when you are close to the enemies. It is all these features that add to the gameplay experience that is Call of Duty 4. Some even consider it to be something that Halo 3 should have been.
Lifespan Long -> Ultimate
The single player will last you for at least a couple of hours, if you’re not playing on veteran, when the difficulty really gets cranked up. Restarting the mission every 20 seconds will get quite boring after awhile, and could possibly cause many people to give up on it, which is a shame. The multiplayer experience will engross you into its trap almost instantly, and you’ll find it hard to not like every minute of it.
Overall Verdict: 5/5 Was This The Best Game Of 2007?
Call of Duty 4 is undoubtedly an amazing game. Some people could even say that it is over rated but what do these people know. This is defiantly worth the money and you will never look back when you buy it. A definite must have!
