Capcom announced today that it will not be renewing its takeover defense, and is now open to a buyout, should a third party company buy a large enough share of Capcom stock.

Up until now, Capcom's takeover defense, which was originally instituted in 2008, has kept any company from acquiring Capcom directly through its shareholders. This method, known as a hostile takeover, is now possible following the shareholders' decision not to renew the countermeasure.

The company said it "will react to take steps to ensure disclosure of the position of the board of directors," and also make sure "there is sufficient time for shareholders to examine the proposed large-scale purchase and reach a decision."

In April, Capcom began construction on its second research and development center in Osaka, Japan after announcing a $78 million plan to expand and increase focus on internal game development. The plan also included hiring 100 new developers per year, in the hopes of having 2,500 on staff by 2022.

As for existing Capcom developers, Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono announced yesterday that he is leaving Capcom Vancouver, where he most recently worked on Dead Rising 3. Although it's unclear whether Ono is leaving Capcom completely, he did say he needed time to think about his next step.

I hope Sony or Nintendo buys them out and saves Megaman and other series.

I agree Sony or Microsoft would be great. The last thing I would want is EA to buy them. Ea ruins everything they touch, look what they did to Bioware.

P.S. Its a shame they are looking for a buyer. I was under the impression that they were doing good as a company.

EA can't do much worse than capcom.

And doing good? They been so nasty and underhanded these past years it's not funny. Charging extra money, shutting down projects left and right, not releasing games outside of Japan and many other things.

Yea Capcom has been doing VERY poorly. I agree that Nintendo would be decent, but I mean lets face it, the games that would come out would be pretty crappy.. maybe in older days.. but not now.. I'm pushing hard as hell for Sony to take over.

Without question, I agree with the Nintendo buy out would be amazing. Sadly, I doubt we can expect that to happen. Personally, I'm waiting for Nintendo to create games for mobile phones, but it would take the shareholders to push them to do that.

In any case, I'm sure Capcom will get gobbled up by someone -- likely another game company rather than Sony or Microsoft.

I would want Nintendo to buy them only only for their classic series such as Mega Man which I'm sure would fit right in with Nintendo's and its classics.

But for the more serious series such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry I don't want Nintendo to get their hands on those series and have full reign since I'm not sure a company like Nintendo could do those series justice.

I would rather have Sony get those series, but then knowing sony a lot of my favorite capcom games may end up being exclusive to only sony systems.

So maybe another gaming company taking them over would be better than a huge multimedia one.
