Today, NIS America (publisher of Disgaea) announced it's bringing the cult hit Cave Story to the 3DS this summer. Cave Story first appeared on the indie scene back in 2004 as a freeware PC game developed by one Japanese fellow named Daisuke Amaya. It immediately gained a following for its Metroid-style gameplay and retro graphics. Last year it was ported to WiiWare and DSiWare.
Cave Story 3D is being rebuilt from scratch and isn't a straight port. All of the environments and characters are being remodeled to look more modern. We saw the game on a 3DS tonight and although its not running in 3D, yet, the new environments already have a lot more depth to them.
New content is being added for Cave Story 3D, but Amaya wasn't ready to divulge any details when we spoke with him this evening. He did tell us that the reason he wanted to bring Cave Story to the 3DS and revamp the graphics was because he was aware not everyone appreciated the original retro look of the game. He started working on a more modern-looking version of Cave Story two years ago but didn't realize at the time it would end up being in 3D.
Amaya tells us he is impressed with the 3DS and is "continually amazed with Nintendo."
