Remember those photos of the re-designed PlayStation 3 that leaked last week? Supposedly, Sony plans to reveal a slimmed down PS3 3 at E3 this year, and some supposed photos of the new design and its box leaked from a Chinese manufacturing plant and were spread about on every blog in existence that covers games or tech.

If you're anything like me, you took a look at the photos and wondered whether they were fake or real. There was no way of telling -- they looked real enough, but there was nothing there that would have been too hard to mock up, and a lot of people on the internet seem to have a lot of time on their hands to do things like that, so it could have gone either way. Also, they look a little fake. Not sure exactly why, but something looks off. Maybe the font or something. Besides, this is the internet, so almost everything eventually turns out to be fake.

The subject of the PS3-skinny would have almost certainly quietly died, but then the Japanese wing of tech blog Engadget was sent a cease and desist letter: The email, from an unnamed Chinese company (not Sony), says in part:

QUOTE We are investigating this violation and will bring all necessary legal actions regarding this matter. In order to protect the confidential information and prevent you from further legal issues and infringements, please immediately remove those pages and keep our request confidential. If you have any question regarding this issue, please feel free to contact us.

I guess Engadget chose to ignore the "keep our request confidential" part of the email. For that matter, the pictures are still up too.

Because I am an internationally recognized master of both Kung Fu and Internet rumors, I will now examine a few different scenarios regarding this email as well as providing a percentage likelihood* of them being correct.

1. The email is from a third-party Chinese manufacturing company that is making the PlayStation 3 for Sony. The company is trying to cover its bases after letting images of the PS3 slip onto the net. This means the PlayStation 3 Slim is real. Likelihood percentage: 64.33% After all, if it was a fan-made mock-up, who would bother sending anything out?
2. The email is from a Chinese company manufacturing a knock-off PlayStation 3, who don't want to draw attention to their counterfeiting operation. Likelihood percentage: 5.12% Pirates usually don't send legal emails but I guess it could have gone down that way.
3. Whoever took the time to create these fake pictures of the PlayStation 3 also took the time to fake up a cease and desist letter, thus adding to the veracity of the story. Likelihood percentage: 34.221%
4. It was all the work of reverse vampires. Likelihood percentage: 0.000001%. Reverse vampires aren't real, so they likely had nothing to do with this situation.

Sony is keeping quiet on the situation, as you'd expect.

this whole slim thing is getting out of control

Maybe Sony can make the PS3 wider instead of thicker to make it more slim.

I agree with you the slim thing is getting out of control.
