I am sure not many would want them to be treated them as anime.
As for me, it doesn't really matter. What about you guys?

Made from the same area really, so they should count.

That’s kind of the weird thing when you have people treat a marketing label as a genre, and it shows how petty the label becomes. Those labels aren’t genre related, but have a sole defining definition. When you get rid of that one defining factor, it does show how useless it is.

The sole definition of anime is a cartoon from Japan. People come up with XYZ definition over what makes an anime, an anime, and you get weird situations where people debating whether or not an anime that doesn’t have the stereotypical art style is considered an anime.

What throws people off are labels that don’t have titles that are obvious, and when you have tropes that are largely relegated to a specific label. You see a label like “Italian music” you don’t have to explain that it’s music... from Italy. If you gave it a different name, then people will start debating what constitutes as that label.

Or look at web comics. If you no longer distribute it online, it’s no longer a web comic.

I have seen situations where this happened before, and they just make a new term that’s more inclusive or more genre focus, as opposed to using a label that’s specific to country of origin or based on the distribution method.

this reminds me of the Avatar last air bender flame wars over it being a cartoon like anime.

I see that a lot with other marketing labels. Like how people debate over Dark Souls being a JRPG. Apparently saying “it’s an RPG... from Japan, so that makes it a JRPG” isn’t a good enough answer. Despite the fact it’s literally the sole defining factor.

I get confused when I see someone name an indie RPG as a “Western JRPG”. What does that mean? Is it turn based? Can’t we just say “turn based RPG?.

yeah, safe to say JRPG no longer represents the usual turn base combat it was known for.

A lot of these types of labels don’t really have much of a point to exist anymore after a certain point. If the one defining feature largely ceases to exist, we just need to drop it

Dragon quest is the only series that still sticks to it and I feel they will change come next major game.

Is Pokémon not turn based anymore? Iirc Shim Megami Tensei V is also going to be turn based.

Kind of hard to say with Dragon Quest. 11 is just DQ9, but looks like 8. They don’t usually go too crazy with their changes between games. Enix tends to be more consistent than Square.

Haven't played Pokemon to say, though it looks like they are mixing it up in the next game somewhat.
