You know that "Surgeon's General Warning" that labels cigarettes as detrimental to your health? Now, imagine a label just like that (with the same stigma and negative connotation) for violent video games as follows:
"WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior."
That's what the Video Game Health Labeling Act that California Rep. Joe Baca introduced yesterday would say if it's pushed through to legislation.
"We must hold the video game industry accountable and do everything in our power to ensure parents are aware of the detrimental effects that violent games can have before making decisions on which games are appropriate for their children to play," Baca said about the bill (via GamePolitics.com). "I am proud to introduce the Video Game Health Labeling Act, and am hopeful this legislation can work to stop the growing influence of violent media on America’s children and youth."
Huh. Thought we had the ESRB (which is, essentially, voluntary to participate in) to hold the industry responsible for properly labeling games for its appropriate age group? What do you guys think? Think violent video games should be labeled the same as cigarettes?
