At least the old system of registering codes for things. Apparently because of fraud and duplicate registrations and stuff, Nintendo is planning a new system which directly connects purchase information with the Club Nintendo reward thing.

The codes would be printed on the box and tracked with the purchase information. The code is tracked to check whether the console or game was purchased legitimately...

If you return a product, you lose the codes and stuff related to it, and if you use the points gained from registering a product, it becomes impossible to return it. Or something.

Here's a picture of the patent:

What do you think of this idea? Personally I think it's a good one in theory, but I don't see it working well in practice simply because there's no universal system for retailers, and I think it could be a real hassle for smaller stores who don't understand the whole Club Nintendo code system as it is already.

I, too, agree that the retailers will not like it, but something needs to be done. As it is right now, you can go into Gamestop, take pictures with your cell phone of the codes that are in the display boxes. They are left in the boxes 90% of the time. It's easy to rip off the codes, so something, obviously, needs to be done.

Why not just put the code in the actual cae opposed to on it. Therefore it is only obtainable by buying and unpackaging it.

^That's what they already do. But because people can lose them easily, Nintendo wants to add the code to the outside of the box and introduce this new system.

So they want to add a new system that will be a hassle for retailers because people loose stuff too easily?

Maybe put the code in a QR format? Maybe once it's scanned the game can be registered. (probably could make it only work when in a wifi point for obvious reasons)

if nintendo really goes with this, i will deactivate my club nintendo account

I really can't see this happening. It's probably just something they patented, on the off-chance that they may use it, just so no one else can steal the idea in the mean time.
If they really wanted this kind of strictness, why not just have the game register itself digitally? It's already possible to have both the Wii and 3DS linked to your Club Nintendo account, so when you start playing a new game that could simply be logged and the points credited to your account.

Would be better if it got registered when you start up the game, but if somebody else used it before it wouldn't get registered. Of course it must be some way to link your 3RD/Wii/Wii U to club nintendo.
