Right on the heels of the news that the Conan O'Brien/FOX late-night TV deal was falling through due to the protests of local affiliates (who'd rather reap the ratings of syndicated series like Friends), comes the news that the red-headed comedic darling/victim of NBC's programming fiasco will be headed to...TBS.
That's right. And Conan couldn't have put it better himself. "In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said. "My plan is working perfectly."
TVGuide.com is reporting that Conan entered into negotiations last week after TBS late-night host George Lopez called and asked him to consider TBS as an option. So, as it stands now, next November, Conan O'Brien will return to TV with a new hour-long comedy show at 11/10c, Monday through Thursday, bumping George Lopez' Lopez Tonight (which had already been renewed for as second season) to midnight. That's right. Conan will be the lead-in show, and face off against Jay Leno and David Letterman, as he hoped to - albeit with a half hour head start on them.
"I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez commented in a statement. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy." The new TBS deal will allow Conan to own his own show, much in the same way that David Letterman does, while also giving him an eight-figure compensation package. Conan will now also follow suit with the likes of Lopez, Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel and air four original episodes a week – one less than he was doing on NBC.
