When we think of competitive video games, we think of genres like fighting games such as Street Fighter, or racing games like Need for Speed, or RTS games such as StarCraft, or FPS shooters like Counter-Strike, and so on. These games are generally found on console or on the PC, but when it comes to mobile games, the eSports scene isn’t particularly big or eventful.

However according to Kristian Segerstrale, the COO of Super Evil Megacorp who developed the Vainglory, the MOBA title aimed at mobile devices, he believes that the mobile eSports scene could be bigger than the PC eSports scene in the future. Speaking to The Guardian, Segerstrale explained why he felt that way.

According to him, “But in three years’ time, there will still only be 600m or 700m home PCs capable of running the highest-spec PC games, yet there will be 2.5bn or 3bn devices capable of running Vainglory […] That’s why the touchscreen eSports opportunity will be maybe five times larger than the PC eSports opportunity today.”

I'm not sure if smartphone and tablet gaming with a touchscreen will be a fun eSport event to watch compared to PC gaming which looks more fun to watch players move their mouse, and press button on a keyboard very quickly.

Plus, the games on mobile devices don't run as quickly or with as many visual effects set to high as a PC.

It would be funny if thats what people were playing on their phones while at a baseball or football game :p

I agree that mobile game popularity will grow higher every year because smartphones and tablets which cost $100 or less these days are getting better where they can play more high quality games. You can also get a used $100 smartphone, or tablet like the Samsung Galaxy S3, and Asus Nexus 7 2013 which can still play many smartphone games even 3D and HD mobile games.

More people also maybe aware of mobile games like Candy Crush Saga, Modern Combat, and Real Racing 3 than some console and PC games because of the amount of ads, forums, and websites dedicated to mobile gaming online, and the amount of people who play mobile games since most people own a smartphone, tablet, or iPod Touch device.

There is also a chance that mobile gaming just becomes another form of PC Gaming when people connect a keyboard and mouse, or game controller to their smartphone or tablet to play mobile games like PC games which use an external controller like keyboard to move characters.

Games for Windows Tablets like the Microsoft Surface 3 and Pro 3 can be considered PC games since they are playable with a keyboard, mouse, or controller.
