One of the items on President-elect Obama’s agenda has been to delay the country’s conversion from analog to digital television signals slated for February 17. The concern is that the most needy citizens haven’t had a chance to receive coupons from the government which they can use toward the purchase of digital-to-analog converters. The main reason for that is the federal program which is subsidizing the coupons is out of money leading to interested recipients being put on a waiting list until issued coupons expire before being redeemed.
Unfortunately for President-elect Obama and Senate Democrats it seems that Republicans had other ideas. Senate Republicans blocked an attempt to delay the conversion until June 12th according to an Associated Press report. Republicans defeated the bill over fears that a delay would only confuse consumers and cost broadcasters money who have already prepared for the conversion to happen on February 17th.
