In Disney Infinity:

They call it a homage, but to be honest... I'd say this too close to the real game for that. And it makes me wonder whether Nintendo will sue, especially cause it's a large company behind this clone...

What do you think?

It's a goofy custom game mode created by the game designers- and from the tweet they announced it in, it sounds like something anyone could have built. Not sure though, I don't have Disney Infinity 3.0... In any case, I doubt Nintendo would sue them over it seeing as it's a free downloadable thing, and apparently not all that great anyway. There's not any financial damage being caused by it, and I never heard of Nintendo getting upset over the Minecraft version of Splatoon. Just because the design team is affiliated with Disney through their company, doesn't necessarily mean they were 'ripping Nintendo off' or the like- at least not in the way that phrasing implies. Coulda just been the designers dinking around and having fun too!

No, but Nintendo DID get angry over Let's Plays and had those all shut down, even when not garnering a profit, if you recall. I wouldn't put it past them to get upset.

Huh, I didn't hear about that, but I don't follow any Let's Plays at all either. I doubt they'd sue over it though. Throwing a hissy fit on youtube where it's easy to get things taken down (especially when it's just little people) and deciding to take on DISNEY with actual full blown legal action are definitely two different things on the scale. It'd be amusing to watch those two massive corporations legal teams duke it out though, especially over something as petty as this!

that and that'd be like capcom suing SNK for their ripping off Street Fighter with Art of Fighting (now known as Fatal Fury). A genre is a genre and so long as the characters are not 100% identical they cannot be sued for it. Ryo and Ryu are so close it isn't even funny, for example, even in moves and looks.

Didn't Nintendo rip off Disney Infinity toys with Amiibos? It doesn't play like Splatoon. I see no harm done. It's probably not worth their time and money to sue Disney. Who knows..

Amiibos are more a Skylanders rip-off than anything else. Basically, an over-glorified flash drive.

I doubt Nintendo will sue them, Disney and Nintendo have a long standing relationship and have shared IP with each other many times in the past. The Let's Plays were a different thing, they figured they could go after us little guys with no one raising a stink. They want a cut of the ad revenue from the bigger channels. Not saying it's right that's just how it is, they didn't expect such a big backlash over it so they backed off on enforcing it strictly.

The Capcom/SNK thing was a different time, now we've pretty much established that no one can own an entire genre. The competition between the companies was good for both of them and SNK games play a lot different from Capcom games now. But they're still close enough for crossover games, and that's why we got Capcom vs SNK 2 aka the best 2D fighting game ever released.

Seriously, if you own a Dreamcast or have the cash to spare to download it for Xbox 360/PS3 you should check it out. It's so much better than Marvel vs Capcom 2 and I'm saying that as someone that poured most of the early 2000s into playing that game at the arcades.

I wouldn't really call them a rip off in any way honestly. They all have uses that are different enough from each other, and all go with very specific IP's owned by different groups, with very little to no crossover (though the Skylanders Bowser and DK figures kind of ruined that). I wouldn't call them a 'rip-off' anymore then I'd say that 'action figure A' by Hasbro is a ripoff of 'action figure B' by Tonka. They're both action figures. It's more like a genre of toy.

I cannot disagree with that more. I despised anything SNGay ever touched (each for different reasons) except Samurai Showdown and the original trilogy of Metal Slug games. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is my favorite fighter to this day and yes, I have played all of the SNK games and cross-overs, for the record. Although, I'll say the Capcom vs SNK games (especially Millenium for PSX) are much much better than the atrocity that was Marvel vs CrapCum 3. Tis a shame Sammy vs Capcom never happened as it was supposed to, though. :/
