Do video game console makers need to realise that other countries besides their own exist?

Because if there's one problem this generation with both Nintendo and Microsoft, it's that they seem too focused on their home market rather than the global one, completely forgetting than many of their touted features are kind of useless for everyone else.

For Nintendo, you've things like StreetPass which just don't work in a country where people live quite far from one another rather than concentrated in large cities like in Japan. You've also got things like off TV play and what not, which seem like they're designed for tiny Japanese homes with only one television rather than the larger ones in other regions where people can simply move to a different room or have the system set up on a personal TV rather than the 'family' one.

And for Microsoft, pretty much all of the Xbox One seems to be designed with the assumption its owners are based in the US. All those TV and entertainment based services are very likely to be US only due to licensing costs and what not, the general function of the system as a living room entertainment device makes the assumption people are quite well off and living in a 90s style Mcmansion (especially things like Kinect), the once a day internet connection thing makes the mistake of assuming people have a great internet connection that never runs into trouble and the used games thing is probably even illegal in Europe to begin with (they said over here that even the likes of Steam has to allow used games sales).

So does anyone else think many console companies are forgetting about the regions beside their own? And that Nintendo is too Japan focused and Microsoft too US focused?

You make a pretty good point Nin. To be honest I think Nintendo and microsoft do It cause they make the most money in that specific region,at the current moment nintendo dominates japan in terms of gaming espeacially with the 3ds while its like that with Micrsoft in the U.S. I could be wrong of course about those two points and I believe sony has a more worldwide focus cause there not doing extremely well or extremely bad anywhere so they dont have a specific region to focus there designs and decisions around, Sony seems stable in all regions.

yes, Sony has a global focus. I see PS3 ads made to attract local people come everyday on TV. There are no ads for Xbox 360, deespite it being available.

Streetpass has no use but off TV-play is quite interesting.

Xbox one won't sell here cause people who buy consoles usually want to avoid steam's always online.

I think only PS4 will sell here in India. Just like the PS3.

Capitalism at work. These other countries you speak of don't exist unless Microsoft/Nintendo thinks they will pay enough to be worth their troubles.

I got my PS3 with a Sony TV! I guess Sony does what Microsoft and Nintendon't!! :D

I dont care about Xbox to comment but I digress with Nintendo. Sometime I wake up and I'l have random street passes from people waking pass my house and I can also just take it anywhere with me and gain street passes. (And no I don't live in a big city, but a very small one at that) Also with the Wii U pad,it's effective here at my house,I can play in any room I want(although I haven't thought about trying rooms in the attic but they'd work to I bet).

When buying consoles you should know what you are getting into and if you know it has features you yourself cant utilize, why buy it and and proceed to generalize your issues or dissatisfactions as a result?

I understood it was unlikely that I would be able to get many streetpasses with my 3DS, as I rarely go anywhere where I'd be likely too get them, and even when I do go to the mall, or out and about in town, it's a lost cause. Nary a pass. But, I personally don't think it's unreasonable for Nintendo to have taken into account those people who aren't as likely to get streetpasses and add in some sort of feature that allows them to take part in the content. Like, say, if you don't get any streetpasses in a week, you get a 'pretend streetpass person' to get puzzle pieces from and play Find Mii with- not enough that you'd really want to play it that way, but you could actually participate, you know?

Honestly, it makes more sense for companies that want to sell their products on a global basis to find a way to cater to everyone they'll be selling it to. I mean, in the case of Nintendo and the Streetpasses, why not add something in that would make sure that the included features that come with your console will appeal to everyone?

Does anyone have a choice when it comes to handhelds? I still can't complete puzzle swap, just because of the pink pieces. I get 10 coins everyday, but the only puzzle i have completed is the metroid one.

yes for streetpass, and 3ds, wii and wii u are region lock but you buy converter for wii but that one wasnt good as the snes games converter was, and previous ds or dsi or dsi xl werent region lock, i hope wii u games converter will better then last one,
