It good that there are many PCs which are still in use after 6 years because the PCs won't end up as Computer Waste which is bad for the Environment. Plus, people are saving money by using an older PC instead of buying a new one.
But, I feel that a lot of people who are using 6 year or older PC may not be happy with the performance of their computer because it is too slow to play games like Grand Theft Auto 5, watch HD video, or use more intensive programs like Photoshop or Adobe Premier video editor at a fast speed.
Users of 6 year and older PC probably experiences more freezes than newer computers because their older PC has less RAM like 1-3 GB, uses a slower CPU like an Intel Atom, Celeron, Core2Dou, or similar low end AMD CPU, slower video card, and a smaller hard drive which is regularly running out of space.
Their 6 year or older PC may still be using Windows Vista which was not a good OS in my experience because of slowdown problems.
The reliability of a 6 year or older PC maybe not as good if parts like RAM, hard drive, video card, motherboard, cooling fans, power supply and battery on laptops are breaking more often because of wear and tear on the parts from using a PC for over 6 years.
A lot of older PCs sometimes get infected by many viruses, malware, bloatware, and other unwanted stuff which makes the PC very slow when there are virus programs which have not been removed. If the user does not maintain the PC by doing disk cleanups, disk defrags, virus scans, and regular PC maintenance like blowing dust out of their computer's case and cooling fans and vents, the computer may become very slow and unreliable after 6 years.
Eeeeehhhh, depends how you view it. My laptop is about 4 or 5 years and its starting to show its age and such. But if it still works for your needs then whats the problem?
Sometimes, it can be very sad that some users like poor students, and workers at a small company with money problems are being held back, and have a lower chance of getting good grades in school, and being successful at work because their old and slow PC can't handle running big programs like big Databases, multi-page Spreadsheets, large Presentations, Photo Editors, video editors, and Educational software at a usable speed. Sometimes older slow PCs can't even open larger Educational and News websites at a fast speed without crashing or freezing an old PC because a lot of educational and news sites now have a lot of HD videos, big pictures, animations, and comments on the website which can slow down many older PCs.
I read sad posts online of workers, and students who feel frustrated about how their work, and school computer and network are so slow, and poorly maintained that it is making their work harder, and more frustrating to finish.
But, richer students, and workers at richer companies have better chances of being successful because they can afford a faster computer and better software which can get more work done like Encoding a HD video, Editing an image file, or using Educational Software and websites at a faster speed without having PC problems like crashing, and freezing because of not having enough RAM, a slow CPU and video card which can't keep up with the heavy demands of a program, and other problems which are more common on older and slower computers.
This was one of my first thoughts too. I think it is bad the rate at which people are updating phones. There is many child labour and unfair conditions to find the components and get the electronics made.
So long the majority of people are keeping the computers by choice it is not sad. A lot of people stretch their lives of their devices by upgrading stuff themselves, so while the base might be very old, they actually are still good for the task.
It only is sad if people are having underperforming computers because they cannot afford a more decent one, but then the lack of computer or the sue of an old one is just one of the symptoms of a bigger problem (or mix of problems) that requires attention.
I think it's ironic because Apple still sells a model that next year will be 5 years old. I don't think it's a bad thing, if you get a really decent computer then it can last more than 5 years. Also some people just don't have the money.
