So when a new game in a series is released and one or more things are different compared to the previous games, how do you generally react? If there was a major change in a new game?
For example:
A different protagonist, a different villain, a different art style, a new mechanic is introduced, an old mechanic is gone, a shift in tone, a shift in genre, etc.
Do you give it a try? Or are you easily turned off when something is too unfamiliar? Do you think games should change or stay very similar?
I don't want to make this a poll since the answers can be so different.
I mean, on the one hand, I quite like it when sequels change up a lot of things in a way that builds on the previous games and retains what made them great. Like many Zelda games and their different art styles, villains, gimmicks, etc. Or playing as Bowser in Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story. Or Mario Galaxy and gravity based gameplay.
I don't however like change for the sake of change. Like say, how Paper Mario Sticker Star threw out everything and became absolutely awful as a result. Or how Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was similar. In those cases, I'd have far preferred a more down to earth, 'evolutionary' upgrade to the series like Mario & Luigi Dream Team or the like instead.
I would prefer it to be a poll cause opinions are biased. All games have a certain play mechanic that stays the same and keeps the game unique. Much like Smash Bros. vs. say a Street Fighter game. RPGs always have HP and EXP. points. It's the little or big things that keep them different. Platformers have the ability to jump and on and on. Spin-offs could be used as an experiment to see who would buy it, but companies can't live off of spin-offs without having a series people like first. The biggest things I would accept are different villains and maybe different heroes
