Topic says it all. SMG2 had Miyamoto commenting on how they didn't want to put in any form of major plot, so they kept it simple. I was fine with this decision, it didn't affect my overall experience with it. That said, with upcoming Mario games on the horizon, would you want an interesting and "out of the ordinary" plot to appear that doesn't involve just Peach being stolen? Would you want a little bit more, or a whole lot more, or maybe even less?
I myself am undecided. While a 3D Mario game with a plot would be kinda awesome in a sense, it would also be a bit weird... I'm more comfortable with heavy plots being applied to the Mario RPG spin-offs like Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario. That said, a combination of the two, so I get a 3D Mario RPG (no, Paper Mario is not what I'd call 3D just yet, seeing as there's a fixed camera and well... the characters are virtually 2D) would be something I would definitely go out and buy, heh.
