I have a lot of friends who prefer Japanese with subtitles, but mostly I prefer dubbed because I'm too lazy to want to read subtitles
An exception to this is when things are changed in the American version, then I tend to like the Japanese with subs.
I don't watch too much anime but two of my favourite animes, Dragonball Z and Cowboy Bebop both had terrific English dubs in my opinion. But I also enjoyed Code Geass and Deathnote in their original Japanese language with subs so I guess I like both.
Cowboy Bebop had really good dubbing work on it. A lot of people hold it up as an example of how good dubbing can be. I also really enjoyed the dub for Baccano!, maybe even more than the original voices just because of how great they did taking the material and running in a good direction with the acting.
I usually prefer just watching subtitled series but if something gets a great dub job then I'll watch it. The exceptions to this rule are series I watch purely for nostalgic value (I'm lookin' at you, dubbed Sailor Moon).
I am a fast reader so I really prefer the subbed anime with the original Japanese language. The voices are just so much better in the original Japanese versions. When they dub it in English they try to make it funny or throw in extra words and it mostly doesn't work. There have been some ok dubs but mostly the ones I have watched have been crappy.
It really depends on the first episode of the series I see and how good the English dub is. I generally prefer Japanese subbed anime, but if the first episode I see is English dubbed, the character's voices will be ingrained in my mind and if I watch a Japanese subbed version, it'll be a bit weird. If the English dub is good, then I'll continue watching the dubbed version.
Back when I was all for preserving authenticity of the shows, I would say subbed. But nowadays, I prefer dubbed. It's just gotten easier for my mind to process as the years have gone on.
I always want dub, if I want to read I'll just look at the manga. Plus there are animes like gundam and death note that would be a pain to watch as sub.
I prefer whichever i see first. Like with Sword Art Online coming out in english, hearing the dubbed voices just killed the characters authenticity for me, so immediately after watching the dub trailer i had to watch the whole series last night so i can hold the original in my heart... but seriously, the ones i hear first i prefer, like english girls bravo, please teacher, and japanese SAO, Ano Natsu De Matteru, and Mirrai Nikki.
I like to have both at the same time. There a major difference between English Dubs to English subs. I have seen it a few series. The English sub is sometimes are not very well translate or takes on a different meaning.
