No, I don't remove the theme makers link from free themes since I am using it for free on my website, and I did not make the theme, so I accept having a small link in the footer to give credit to the theme maker.

No I do not and in some cases you are not allowed too unless you want a lawsuit or a message from the DMCA on your hands.

If the theme maker has an affiliate promotional program, you can become an affiliate and replace the link to go to the sales page for the theme makers premium themes, and you can make a 30% or more commission if you can generate sales from the footer affiliate link.
It's a win win for both theme maker and theme user since he would have more costumers, and you'll will earn 30% of the sales money.

So, with me, there will be no revenue from affiliate links from the free themes which I use..
