Yes, I think someday more of the programs we use would be online rather then offline program because people these days need to access and work on their files from any location.

Plus, if a program was on a web browser , the user would not have to worry about it being compatible with their computer as much.

Like, Youtube video player works on Windows, Mac, & Linux.

Most things usualy require a program from somewhere or the other, like safari for example, its epic, it also says it works for Win XP... I run Win XP, it doesnt work.

I could see the same issue with online tools, only they are less reliable, I could see someone making use of a server on their computer to get stuff though.

Most online programs I used are pretty reliable. But, I only used Joomla, Google Docs, Wordpress, and online video player.

I edit my website with an online program that is run on my webserver. It is pretty reliable since my internet connection rarely disconnects, and have a decent connection speed.

I suppose online programs are as reliable as your internet connection and web server.

But, I also see people using web servers to back up and retreive their files.

Notepad++ is pretty good. I mostly use notepad though since most of the stuff I edit are just simple HTML, PHP and text file.

I like using online editors because I don't need a FTP program to upload stuff because all I need to do is log into my admin account like forums to edit stuff, so I can just edit my webpages when I am at school or work when I am super bored with nothing to do.
