I find it easier to promote blogs since I do not have to join most blogs to post my link in the comment section of a blog since a lot of blogs let anyone post links for your website after you comments as long as the comment is not spam, but with forums you have to post about 5-20 posts till you can access your signature or can post links on your topics and replys via your signiture or posts you wrote on your forum and reposted on other peoples forums by using a source link to link back to your forum on a topic on someone elses forum. Plus, a lot of forums are very strict on posting links to other forums.

Social networking sites are also very difficult to promote since if there is not an active community then no one will join since Social sites topics are too General like "General chat" forums which few people can make successful compared to a web design or graphics forum.

Depending on what a website is about, the amount of content, and quality of postings. If a site has good content that people may like, you may get more visitors. Just as long as those things do not discourage others from posting or reading your site's content.

I agree,

Also, the content have to be unique.

I think it is also very hard to promote a "Search Engine" since there are many well established search engines like "Google, Yahoo, Bing, Live, Ask and many other".

I don't really recommend people spend their time or money trying to make a search engine website as a first website since getting popular in the search market is very hard and a lot of search engines from the 90s like Lycos, HotBot, Excite, Dogpile, Altavista, Netscape Search etc are no longer popular with most people I talk to.
