Yes, I think most people will use a real keyboard to type on a tablet because a lot of cheaper $50-100 tablets seem to come bundled with keyboard case. I bet, not many people are buying those cheap tablets, and bundling a cheap keyboard case will convince people to buy a cheap tablet with a keyboard because they don't want to buy a more expensive laptop or netbook.

Plus, a lot of those tablet keyboards are pretty affordable to buy on eBay for $10.

don't a lot of tablets come with a roll up keyboard that works?

I mostly use my tablet in bed, and a real keyboard would require me to sit in an uncomfortable position. I like virtual keyboards because they are only present when I need it versus a physical keyboard always being present and taking up space.

What problems has your iPad Air been giving you? It's one of the newer models of the iPad. Aren't Apple's tablets supposed to last at least a few three or four years?
Random restarts/reboots (This has become quite less frequent since upgrading to iOS 8.4.x - now running iOS 9) but there's choppy audio and also when i'm using any sort of video type applications like a video call on skype, the audio from my end gets choppy and cuts out often.

Is it under warranty? If so, just take it to an Apple store in your area.
