I'm not sure if most webmasters who want to rank in the top 10 in the search engine results related to their website's category have the best interests of their visitors in mind (hoping their visitors get informed from the content on their website). I feel there are a lot of webmaster who just want to rank high to use their website to get more traffic then their competitors, so they can earn more money by getting more impressions for their ads, sales of products listed on their website, or spread false information to convince people into believing in a specific views like (Windows crashes a lot, and you should move away from Windows to a more stable operating system which hardly crashes like CentOS).

But, there are also a lot of website owners who try to provide better information for their visitors to read on their site vs other similar sites, so they want to rank high to get fewer people to visit poor quality websites with lousy content.
