Yes, I see the number of big websites becoming smaller since there are a lot of smaller websites which offer better Content like articles and video then the big websites because small websites just do a few things very well instead of trying to do everything like big websites, but not doing things well at all because they fail to keep up with so many things at once.
An example of a big website getting smaller amounts of users would be GoDaddy which was down because of a hack DDoS, or technical difficulties a few months a go. Plus, GoDaddy's Cpanel, and service seems to be not as good as smaller web hosts like HawkHost, or Host Gator. GoDaddy's domain and web hosting prices are expensive. I heard a lot of people are switching from GoDaddy to Namecheap, and Host Gator which are not as famous as GoDaddy, but offers better features, service, and reliability for a cheaper price, and don't support SOPA/PIPA, etc.
Plus, there are other big websites like Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Twitter which are making it harder for other big websites like Yahoo and Bing to have a lot of visitors since people are switching to bigger better sites which offer better services and content.
I agree, and big websites might be less fun once your teacher, principal, and other people you don't really hang out with besides school or work join or use it like YouTube, Google and Facebook. Some teachers may not want to hang out with other teachers, or the principle online on Facebook/
I read a lot of teens are using smaller social networks like Instagram, Keek, Tumblr, etc to hide from people they don't want to hang out with from real life.
I see more people just buying a domain name, and subscribing to web hosting to make a simple small forum or blog, and only invite their friends, family, and people who are interested in the topic of their site to join their site instead of using public sites like Facebook to hang out.
I'm pretty sure facebook and youtube are going to be here for the next 20yrs because they are too tapped with practically every site in the world but google may get weak within 10yrs. For the past two years google has been doing really nasty business regarding SEO. One the of the last things they did was called a Penguin update which is suppose to happen every 6 months or so. They said it was to remove spam sites, but realistically it was to drop down all sites that were not major corporations or celebs. It was really annoying!
Facebooks stock is down though. Even though 999 out of 1000 people use it, the trends of what people are doing has been changing so quickly. One mistake and they will lose 50 percent of their traffic. After looking at the spammy nasty comments in 99% of youtube, if facebook turns to that then Bye-Bye.
I read the Google updates also down rank a lot of user generated content sites like Hubpages, eHow, and eZinearticles where most of the content is written by average users instead of major corporations and celebs. The updates also caused user generated sites to be more strict, and delete more articles which they think is causing Google to rank them lower, and make it harder for the average user to write for these sites since the website is afraid that a few bad articles will down rank their site.
I also feel the same way of smaller sites being more relatable.
Sometimes smaller sites have more in-depth content since the web master and bloggers spend more time researching their content compared to a lot of mainstream big websites which write as many articles as fast as they can to become the first website links, to show up in Twitter, Facebook Google News, search results, and other types of promotional sites.
Also, it is more likely a smaller site's writer will reply to your comments vs. a huge site where the writer has hundreds of comments per day being posted to his blog or forum.
