Yes, I think Windows 8 will be faster then Windows 7 when 8 is release since Windows 8 is also designed for Tablets, ARM-Computers, mobile computers, and won't have Aeroglass Animations and effects which tend to slow down slower and older computers.

The System requirements for Windows 8 are about the same as Windows 7. You can also use a video card which is only Directx9 compatible for Windows 8.

Windows 8 System Requirements

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch

According to a review Windows 8 only uses 281MB of RAM and 29 processes vs Windows 7 which uses 404MB RAM, and 32 Processes.

True, it has less features like Aero, but I'm sure it can run most Windows programs like Google Chrome, Office and games which run in Windows 7, and newer XP software.

It does have more Tablet features like The Windows Metro Desktop and User Interface, and better support for Touch Screens.

Microsoft rule of 2. Every 2nd release is a keeper.

Let me explain.
Windows 98 - Solid.
Windows Me - Skip it.
Windows XP - Solid.
Windows Vista - Skip it.
Windows 7 - Solid.
Windows 8 ....

Just my thoughts on the matter, hopefully they break the pattern!

I read somewhere that Win8 had boot times as fast as 10 seconds from a cold boot :o
Now that's some seriously fast start up time!

The less than 10 second boot time Microsoft displayed was on a laptop with a Core i7-2620M Sandy Bridge processor, 8GB RAM and a 160GB solid-state drive. Results using other hardware may vary.

I heard Windows 8 starts up in under 8 seconds from cool boot, and I think with some tweaks and upgrades like over clocking, more RAM, SSD hard drive, and disabling start-up programs the time might be even faster like under 6 seconds.

It's not necessarily about the operating system, but more your hardware.

However, I assume, and hope that W8 will have significant performance improvements, but who knows, you may just have to W8 for EVERYTHING to load completely. ;)

I heard Windows 8 computer will use new computer parts which are compatible with secure boot which lets Windows 8 boot in under 8 seconds, and I think most higher end Windows 8 computer will most likely use a SSD drive which load files and programs faster then a mechanical hard drive.

My thoughts exactly!
I'd be impressed if 8 is good, 9 sucks, then X(10) is good. :P

I'll definitely remain on 7 for as long as I can. I do have a touch screen computer though so the metro bit would be cool. :)

I think Windows 8 would be usable since Windows 8 is like Windows 7 designed for Tablets, and there is still a desktop mode in Windows 8 like 7 for people without touch screens. Plus, all the annoying features of Vista like those UAC Pop-up Windows, and Aero which slowed down slower PCs are solved in Windows 7, so 8 will inherit some of 7 features.

The main problem I see is Software drivers for older hardware like printers, scanners, webcams, etc might not work in Windows 8 until new hardware drivers are release for them.

Same for me, I stick with Windows for the games, and hardware like Printers, USB TV Tuner, etc which only have drivers for Windows, or the drivers for Linux are not as good.

Linux video editing software isn't really good even when compared to Windows Live Movie Maker.

I use Linux for surfing the web, watching video files, HTML editing, and some office work, and it is pretty good and stable.

I think as long as you keep your computer safe from virus, spyware, and malware, run scan disk, disk defrags on your hard drives and, do disk clean up once a week, don't install tons of bloated software, disable rarely used startup programs, and uninstall software you never use on Windows 8 should boot as fast after a year.

In my experience, most slowdowns are caused by viruses, spyware, installing too many programs like Instant Messengers, and Media players which start up when Windows start up, and they never defrag and run scan disk on their hard drive or did a disk clean-up, or a overheating computer making things slow.

Sometimes if you remove most of the bundled software like bundled Antivirus, Anti-malware, and software by companies like Norton, McAfee, and others which sometimes come with store bought PC from HP, Dell, Acer, etc, and use a faster antivirus like eSet NOD32 Antivirus your computer will feel faster then the day you bought the computer because the bundled software are not slowing down your PC after they are un-installed, and replaced with lightweight antivirus and other types of software.

I read a lot of post online about Norton, McAfee, and other antivirus companies slowing down their PC compared to more lightweight antivirus like eSet NOD32.

Also, using system utility software like Advance System Care 5, TuneUp Utilities, and other software help with maintaining your PC performance.
