Does Majora's Mask really need a remake?

Because as much as people call for one, I have to wonder why exactly one would be needed.

The original is a decent game, but it doesn't really leave too much open that can be improved upon, or anywhere to add extra side quests/areas/other stuff. Ocarina of Time 3D got around problems with some controls and added a boss rush, but I don't hear too many complaints about the former in Majora's Mask and you can refight bosses by going back in time anyway. Not to mention there's just FOUR/FIVE of them. How's that for a boss rush?

What would it honestly need to include? Better graphics sure, but that's hardly a reason to go updating the game. What's the point when a remake would be virtually Ocarina of Time 3D but for Majora's Mask?

Do you think Majora's Mask would really ever need a 3DS remake/rerelease?

I feel that people want it for the pure nostalgia of the game. Also, we can get the new generation to talk about this game as well. It was rare for Nintendo to make a serious story back then so this title hit us pretty well. I would love to see this game come out on the 3DS, both Zelda games for the N64 are bound to give it a deeper, beautiful environment if given a face lift. OoT proved that well.

I feel like MM had so many problems and glitches that it needs a tune up to make it a decent game. Younger people who grew up with it get nostalgic, but I can't help but compare it to OoT and LttP and think of how much better it should have been. Granted, I still might not play the remake, but I would be willing to give it a try if it weren't so danged buggy and have poor controls.

Well i'm kinda odd, (since I LOVE Zelda II) but I really did enjoy playing MM. Sure it was kinda short and needed a lot of help, but it was a great game past all that.

Majora's Mask was rushed when it first came out, so much so that they actually continued the development a bit between the Japanese and US release dates just to grab at that extra time. Ironic since the game is timed, haha. Because of that there are glaring issues with it, but these could and should be fixed in a remake.

Firstly I think I should address the mechanical problem of freezing. All of the ports, even the Wii VC port, will sometimes freeze, and this is maddening in a game with an incremental save system. If the game were remade, they would be able to repair this glitch.

Another problem that a lot of people have with MM comes from the time and save systems. They make the game less accessible, and while a lot of people don't mind them, they completely turn off other people. I hate that since it's a really fun game, I would like to see more people give it a chance and not be scared of the timer or of losing data between saves. Both of those systems were new and made quickly and probably not tested as much as they should have been. I think that if they remake MM they should fix them, by allowing either a save system that will save you at any point and return you to it, or a doing more owl statues and doing a save system like Skyward Sword. I also think they need to make it an option to stop the timer while in dungeons, allow you to choose an exact time to fast forward to with the Song of Double Time, and just explain some things better. I'm surprised by how many people are not aware you can play the Song of Time backwards to slow time down, this needs to be a non-optional dialogue that the player must read.

There are a lot of other things that could be improved, little things. The 3DS touch screen with it's extra item slots would be a huge help because I swear I pause constantly to swap out masks and items and having the extra space would be really nice. The screen in MM is a mess with the clock and all the buttons, so much so that if a dialogue box pops up in a dungeon (for example like how it does when you get a fairy, and it doesn't freeze the gameplay) you literally cannot see what you're doing. The extra screen would clear that up. The great fairy's sword should be a b-button sword, and the hero's shield should be still usable after obtaining the mirror shield (add a gear menu like OOT has). I could go on, but I'm going to school soon.

The point is that I love MM but I do know it's not perfect. I think a remake would give them the chance to fix the things that weren't done quite as well as they could have been, like how they fixed the iron boots in OOT3D. What I want is to see more people play and enjoy my favorite game, and I myself would love a graphically improved version of it that I can take on long trips. That's why I want Majora's Mask 3D.

By no means does it need a remake. It's my favorite Zelda game and for nostalgic reasons, I don't think it needs a remake. Ports are fine, but games don't need remakes. Did Mario 1, 2, or 3 get a remake? No, they didn't. They got ported to the GBA. Actually Mario 2 got a remake which was good for it because it made it more like Mario than Doki Doki Panic.

Basically I'm saying MM is perfectly fine and a remake is unneeded.

Did Mario 1, 2, or 3 get a remake? No, they didn't.

Well they got a graphic remake in Super Mario All Star. Not sure if that counts.

It does. MM could use a graphical update too. Considering you had to buy the graphics card for the N64 to play it, it was even uglier than OoT in some places...

Also, I agree with most all of Nightsong's points. Having played the GC port, I couldn't believe that the sound file is messed up and they have a screen to tell you they fail. And yeah, it REALLY sucks when your limited hardsave option game freezes on you, simply because it is glitchy.

No it doesn't. The graphics are fine. The 64 bits add to the surroundings of being dark. I've seen OoT's graphics of dark places. If they do that it'll be ruined atmospherically.

The screen says it fails, but I had no problems game wise. It worked fine the 3 times I played it. No glitches and I heard no music errors.

I honestly don't believe Majora's Mask needs a remake for 3DS. Sometime in the future, maybe; right now, no. However, if nintendo does decide to release a remake, I'll purchase it, and probably pre-order. I just think a remake would be pointless, and I'd rather have Nintendo working on a new game. I would however like to see it (along with Ocarina of Time) available on eShop.

Well, it would be wise to remake it while the engine used for OOT3D is still recent, so they can avoid spending the time making another new engine. So if it gets a remake the 3DS is the platform of choice. And I don't think there is any question of new game vs remake, we will get a new Zelda and it's already been basically announced, it's a question of whether or not we get Majora's Mask on the 3DS in addition to the new game, which I think would be nice, and as I said in my other post I do believe that MM is in need of a remake.

I think it'd be a good idea.

There are plenty of younger players out and about in the world who probably don't have access to Wii's VC - nor the interest - and would probably play it because "Legend of Zelda" is on the front cover. They'd bring a fabulous game both to a new generation, and a remastered adventure for those of us who have played it countless times.

MM is probably my favorite Zelda game, I would definitely buy it if it was released, but I wouldn't be too disappointed if it wasn't. Theres not much that it could really improve on, and I own the N64 version so it doesn't matter much to me.

I agree it was kinda short. I would love a remake but it's not necessary.

I agree with you completly. I really like your points you made. You should paste this and send it to Nintendo. It could have them make one.
