I'm not sure if there is a conspiracy with Windows software makers and the Hardware companies to make people buy more expensive and faster computers to just run Windows without any slowdowns, but Windows Vista, and 7 usually uses more then 600MB of RAM and 10-50+% of the CPU power when Google Chrome web browser, VLC media player are opened open, and an antivirus program running in the background to protect Windows from viruses.

Windows Vista and 7 uses about 16GB-20GB of space to install it on the PC.

While Linux based operating systems like Ubuntu 10.04 only uses under 290MB of RAM, and around 10% of the CPU power running the same programs at the same time like Google Chrome, and VLC media player in my experience.

I think Microsoft possibly make Windows use more RAM, CPU power, and hard drive space to make people spend more money on expensive computers with faster computer parts or buy costly computer parts to upgrade their older computers to run the latest version of Windows smoothly rather then Microsoft spending the time and money to make their operating systems slimmer, faster on most older computers like Xubuntu Linux.

My HP Compac NC 8000 laptop running on xubuntu linux ver 8.04.
Tech specs 2 sticks of 512 MB, 1.6Ghz processor, 32 Bit architecture, 80GB hard drive, 76GB FREE
after Xubuntu installed. This pc is approx 7 yrs old.

its not a matter of which requires more power, because its all relative. Anyone with a slower or older computer will stick with XP or the linux for example,

but anyone running 12 GB of ram, etc hardly cares about the OS using a measley 600 mb, whereas the older OS systems dont even recognize much over 2 or 4 GB

i dont think its the industry making the OS require a certain computer, i think its the computer market building "super" computers for home so they need more advanced OS's

this was my 2 cents

I have to agree with that above, people are wanting faster, smarter computers and with that comes more software, hardware and such.

Indeed, I think it also has something to do with the computer makers bundling more RAM, faster video cards and faster CPU to attract people to buy newer PCs which require more Advance 64bit Windows operating systems to see more then 4GB amount of RAM.

But, it would still be great if Microsoft can create a modern operating system which can perform well on older and newer computers.

Using less RAM, and CPU cycles might reduce the power usage by a few Watts, and lower the internal temperature of a computer by a few degrees.

Although, Linux is an advance operating system which can see over 4GB of RAM as well which works great on both slower and faster PCs. But, there is less of an incentive to run Linux on a faster computer with 4 or more GB of RAM, and a 3.0 GHz CPU for doing regular tasks like Word Processor, internet, playing music and video files, non-3D gaming, or basic photo and video editing since a basic computer with 1GHz or less CPU, 512MB or less of RAM, & PCI-Express or or newer onboard video can do daily tasks at a decent to fast speed for most of the tasks listed.

It is a simple fact of what the OS needs. In this day and time it is not hard to get a 1gb machine with atleast a 1.1ghx cpu.(Min specs for windows 7 home)

Yes some Linux distros need less specs, but look at what is running to. It is just all around less resource intensive, which means less specs.

I hope I made sense there.

Thanks, it makes sense.

I guest Microsoft also save some money by spending less money and time on coding a slimmer operating system while spending more time on adding options, effects, and other programs which Windows users want because user saw a similar feature on Mac OS X, or a Linux based operating system like Linux Mint which people saw in use from friends or YouTube. I wonder have social networking sites, and how easy it is to find information about different operating system made Computer users more demanding on also wanting to have similar features which they found on competing operating systems like OS X, and Linux based OS.

I wonder how long will it take or will ever for Windows to make desktop animations which look like Compiz, and can run at a decent speed on most PCs.

I'm currently using Puppy Linux which copies most or all of the core operating system files to RAM like Parted Magic. I notice most programs like Google Chromium Web Browser, Abiword and VLC media use launch in 1-2 second. I'm not even using a SSD. It is amazing from an operating system which is just 138.5MB in size when burned to a CD.
