Does the hero have to be called Link?

I know Nintendo themselves like to call each of the main heroes Link (along with the 'Hero of Whatever' title), but is there anything in universe that theoretically stops the main charcter being called something else?

Because surprisingly, the curse put on Hyrule and the main characters by Demise doesn't specify this, it just says:

Those who share the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero

Does that mean any character could technically be the hero, even one neither called Link or with anything in common with him bar the heroism?

Heck, even if Ganon turned out to be a good guy in one game the curse could technically follow him, which would be an interesting situation (since Ganon's seen as the reincarnation of Demise's hatred, so...)
 
Heck, what if Zelda or Link turned out to be the villain? That could lead to an interesting effect if you consider the curse thing...
 
But Link isn't called Link, not really. You can call him whatever you like. 'Link' is really just a placeholder name
 
Yeah. He's just the Link to the game. xD

Seriously though I don't know. Maybe being named after the hero makes you the hero.
