People love 2D games. Amidst news of of revised revenues and Wii sales slowing from their record setting levels, Nintendo announced their top selling Wii and DS games through the end of 2010. If you're a Donkey Kong fan, peel yourself a banana--Retro Studio's 2D revival of the meandering mascot had a strong opening. According to Nintendo, Donkey Kong Country Returns has sold 4.21 million units since its release on November 21.
This continues a winning trend for Nintendo gussying up their old IP's in new 2D iterations that started with New Super Mario Bros. DS and continued with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which have respectively sold 26.2 million and 21.2 million units life-to-date. Mario's other outing, the 3D Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released May 23 and has so far sold 6.15 million units. That's slightly less than the 6.58 million sold for New Super Mario Bros. Wii from April to December 2010. Metroid: Other M, Nintendo's other big ticket 2D/3D mix from 2010, didn't crack Nintendo's Top 10 list.
