St. Louis area man Scott A. Masters, 41, is accused of shoplifting a doughnut from a convenience store and is facing a sentence of 30 years to life.
Why such a steep sentence for a guy that nicked a single doughnut?
Well, it turns out that, 1. Masters pushed a store worker who tried to stop him, elevating the crime to strong-arm robbery, and 2. he has a long prior arrest record, which doubles the 5 - 15 year sentence he might normally be eligible for.
And the prosecutors show no signs of backing down in going after the full penalty.
I guess they are pissed that when a store worker, a 54-year-old woman, followed him into the parking lot, grabbed his arm and demanded he come inside, Masters allegedly delivered "a backhanded punch to the chest" and took off running.
