Download Speeds Vary

Like most countries, download speeds in the US vary from city to city. Unlike most other countries, though, the United States is huge, meaning those differences can be, well, just as huge.

A study by Pando Networks has found the average download speeds for internet users across the United States, and perhaps unsurprisingly found that those living in the North East, California and Washington enjoy significantly faster internet speeds than those in states like Idaho and Wyoming.

These are of course just averages, so not everyone in Idaho is that slow. Likewise, there will be people in Seattle on dial-up! Somewhere.

What does this mean? Well, Americans, if you're sick of disconnecting from online games when you hear a foreign accent, you can use this handy map to discriminate against low-ping users from your own country.

interesting. my dad lives somewhere where the internet is really slow , he used to use dial up but now he found this other company no one's every heard of..

I always thought it was based on how much you pay for internet like if you pay 60-100 dollars a month for internet, your internet speed is a lot faster then the average user because the ISP gives you a faster connection for paying more.

they can give you faster internet, but no grantee that you will get the speed at all times if any.

Indeed, but the user who pays 60-70 dollars a month probably get faster speed then the user who pays 20-30 dollars a month for internet from the same company they are both subscribe to as their ISP.

not necessarily, I sometimes get speeds equal to dial up with my broadband.

Could it be your router, cable or DSL modem, or Windows 7 causing your download speed slowness?

I notice that different brands of routers seem to be faster then other brands, and sometimes Windows tend to slow down the internet when I have to many instant messengers, and browsers open.

My internet used to be the most expensive internet ever and also the slowest ever.
