Japan's strange love affair of quests involving dragons shows no signs of letting up. The DS remake of part 5 in the Dragon Quest series topped the charts in its first week of release. Despite this, the DS still failed to beat the PSP, which remained once again atop the hardware chart.

Media Create's latest report, covering July 14 to July 20, has Dragon Quest V selling 643,764 units in its first week. It handily beat Gundam Battle Universe for the PSP, which debuted in second at 137,550 units. Persona 4, last week's top placer, came in at third with 40,680 units, besting a PS3 newbie, Tears To Tiara, which sold 34,431 units.

The rest of the top ten was packed with older titles. In fifth was Wii Fit with 27,198 units. Below it came Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii, 23,992 units), Band Bros. DX (Nintendo, DS, 21,419 units), Derby Stallion DS (Enterbrain, DS, 16,248), Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Capcom, PSP, 16,040), and Legendary Starfy (Nintendo, DS, 15,693).

Those who like to play their Gundam games on the PSP will see some good news in the above sales data. Although not taking top place, Gundam Battle Universe has the best performance so far for the Battle series. Previously, Battle Chronicle, sold 86,000 units in its first week. Before that, Battle Royal sold 65,000 units and Battle Tactics sold 37,000 units.

In the hardware race, PSP got another boost this week to 74,024 units, managing to best the DS Lite's 54,531 units, itself a slight leap over usual sales. Wii sold 40,803 units placing it high above the the rest of the console pack which had PS3 at 11,253 units, PS2 at 9,535, and Xbox 360 at 4,208.
