Don't know if any of you guys have heard of domain slamming or of DROA.com, but it's a nasty business for those that own domains when they fall victim to these tossers.
Basically domain slamming is when a registrar sends out domain "transfer" forms to look like domain "renewal" forms in an attempt to trick the customer in to believing they are renewing their domain with the domain provider but in actual fact they are signing a transfer form to transfer the domain to a different registrar, i.e. DROA.com.
DROA (Domain Registry of America) have been known to do this for several years. The shock that the customer has isn't just that their domain has actually been transferred to a different registrar, but it is more that the charge DROA put on the domain is considerably higher than most genuine registrars and the domain has to stay in their possession for 120 days before you can transfer it to another registrar or back to the one you originally had it with.
For further information on this you can see this: http://hosting-reviews-exposed.com/scams-to-avoid/droa-com.html
Also, I was sadly a victim in 2011 and you can read my story here: http://www.gamerperfection.com/blogs/gamer-1/oh-you-didnt-just-try-scam-me-66/
Normally i spot these scams a mile off, but clearly I was not on the ball on this one. I've definitely learned my lesson on this. But for those of you that own domains please make sure you are dealing with the correct people, and try and get your contact details restriced on WHOIS.
Oh and my story didn't seem to have the ending that i remember, but basically I got the domain transferred back in under 120 days because I took my complaint all the way to ICANN who themselves had words with DROA about it. Guess DROA didn't expect that! Annyoing thing is though that to transfer the domain back to my registrar I had to pay my registrar and therefore spent more money, but I was pleased that my domain was not in their hands anymore.
