Gaming, or over-gaming, is a growing concern in Japan, and certain Japanese manufacturers are looking to keep gamers' gaming practices healthy, even if it means annoying the hell out of them.

The Health Control Game Timer (HCGT) is a an attachment for the Nintendo DS that keeps track of a player's play time and measures the distance between a player's face from the screen. Using a distance-measuring camera built into the cartridge, an alarm within the HCGT will sound if a player's face is too close to the screen, preventing strain and damage to the user's eyes. The preferred distance range can be designated on a four-way switch on the HCGT, indicating: small range, medium range, large range, and disabling the distance sensor entirely.

Similarly, the timer can be toggled between four increments of 30 minutes – 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. When the time limit is reached, the HCGT will beep and its' built-in LED light will flash, indicating that game time is over. As if that weren't enough to help you in exercising gamer's restraint, the HCGT has an auto-shutoff feature that turns off your DS after the time limit has been reached; better hope the game you are playing has an auto-save feature!

The Health Control Game Timer is available exclusively in Japan, and costs roughly $40.

yeah, that will never even see my DS, but I can see this reaching the states sooner or later.

People should really have more self control then rely on Technology to nagg them.

I wouldn't see many people buying this except for lazy parents, or people who have poor self-control.

I've herd of this its really stupid lots of consoles and handheilds overload but the X-BOX has the most count of overloads and faults.

But the DS? wow

Ive been lost in a game(or the internet) but I have never had to stop myself because I usually just play my DS a bit before bed, so about 25 minutes a night.

Same for me. I usually play my Handheld consoles for 25min to an hour before bed. I find playing games before bed help me sleep better.
