The DS gave the PSP a double dose of Media Create-brand whoop this past week, topping both the hardware and software charts.
For the summer break period covering August 11 to August 17, the DS sold 78,666 units, a sizable jump from the 60,434 units of the week before, and more than enough to beat the PSP, which was also up this week to 64,413 units.
Over on the software charts, Rhythm Heaven took the top spot for the first time since its release, selling 136,637 this week. It finally managed to beat out PSP's Phantasy Star Portable, which dropped to second this week with 74,039 units.
Nintendo's dominance in hardware wasn't just limited to the DS, of course. Wii sold 53,036 units for the week, beating out all other consoles combined. PS3 managed 11,393 units, ahead of the PS2's 10,168 units and the Xbox 360's 7,358 units.
The 360, in particular was down from last week's 20,000-plus performance, although it appears that the system was going through some supply problems. The source for last week's hardware spike, Tales of Vesperia, fell from fourth position on last week's chart to 11th this week.
It was a slow week for games overall, explaining why the rest of the top ten software chart was all old. Dragon Quest V placed third with 73,747 units, and was followed by Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii, 46,506 units), Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii, 36,174 units), Fire Emblem DS (Nintendo, DS, 35,308), Band Bros. DX (Nintendo, DS, 24,237), Taiko no Tatsujin DS Seven Island Adventure (Bandai Namco, DS, 19,557), Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 15 (Konami, PS2, 18,670), and Wario Land Shake (Nintendo, Wii, 18,331).
