For those of us who have cast away the shame of scouring through bags of trash – colloquially known as dumpster diving – there are potential treasures aplenty.

And if you’re a gamer, Gamestop dumpsters can be a gold mine.

Video games, working controllers, strategy guides, store displays: all can be found strewn among the debris, ready to be snatched up by anybody willing to dive into a (moderately dirty) refuse bin.

But how do these gaming treasures end up in dumpsters to begin with? The answer is simple - if you’ve seen the inside of a Gamestop, you know that shelf real estate is an incredibly hot commodity. Stores are packed wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling with games and gaming accessories. With Gamestop dealing in trade-ins as an enormous part of their business, those trade-ins are handled one of three ways: They’re sold as-is, they’re refurbished, or they’re tossed in the trash.

this isn't a bad idea.....

I'd go through their rubbish anyday, who knows what awesome gaming stuff you could find? xD

The PS2 only had 2 controller slots for the system, so a multitap was created by Sony for those games that where 4 to 6 players.

You plugged it into one of the controller and memory card slots and presto, 6 additional slots.

Me and friends used to use it mostly for games like Smackdown shut your mouth and 007 Nightfire.

I am 39 years old, I have my pride. There is no way I would be caught dead diving in Gamestops dumpster. If I can not afford to buy it from the store then I don't need it.

This isn't a good idea to steal someone's trash because it may still be consider the person's property or the property of the government or company who collects the trash, and you can get sued, or pay a fee for stealing. It is best to ask the local police department, lawyer, or judge if it is okay to steal trash in your town.

People who go through garbage can also be accussed of identity theft because a lot of ID Thieves who steals people identity search people's trash for old bank statements, bills, and credit card statements where they steal info to take out a loan, create a credit card, and find work in the victims name.

It also may not be worth it to go looking in trash because there are drug users which throw needles, and broken pipes into the trash which can make you get infected by a sickness which is incurable.

I would absolutely love trying this one day. The amount of Gamestops in my area is insane. I would've done it by now, but I think I read years ago that some video game stores actually destroy their merchandise (like punching holes in game discs) rather than just give it away. I guess that's not true (or, at least, not anymore). I'll have to find a store with an unsecured dumpster, though. But I'm definitely not above doing it.

Wow.. That would be a great business. Go in the bin and search for stuff, and the stuff I find I can bring home check if it works then sell it at school.. Hmmm. Theres my day time job!
