More bad news in the gaming world, EA is joining lots of other companies in laying off around 350 employees, again mostly in the marketing, publishing, and other areas of advertising. EA had this to say:

Today we took some important steps as a company to address our challenges and prepare for the opportunities ahead. As we look across a changing world around us, it’s clear that we must change with it. We’re making deliberate moves to better deliver on our commitments, refine our organization and meet the needs of our players. As part of this, we have made changes to our marketing and publishing organization, our operations teams, and we are ramping down our current presence in Japan and Russia as we focus on different ways to serve our players in those markets. In addition to organizational changes, we are deeply focused on increasing quality in our games and services. Great games will continue to be at the core of everything we do, and we are thinking differently about how to amaze and inspire our players.

“This is a difficult day. The changes we’re making today will impact about 350 roles in our 9,000-person company. These are important but very hard decisions, and we do not take them lightly. We are friends and colleagues at EA, we appreciate and value everyone’s contributions, and we are doing everything we can to ensure we are looking after our people to help them through this period to find their next opportunity. This is our top priority.”

Hopefully, most of EA employees can find new jobs.

I feel the popularity of social networking ads may make EA and other companies hire fewer workers to work in advertising. EA can buy many million of dollars in ads on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, and a lot of video game ads are just gameplay video with music, and subtitles, or screen shots of games in banner ads on websites.

That sounds like a plausible theory.

I think EA may not need to hire as many advertising workers to advertise their games on the internet as much these days compared to a few years ago when there were fewer gaming news websites and gaming video sites like Twitch and YouTube gaming.

There are now a lot of gaming blogs and forums which post news about new games for free without needing to receive game maker's money for posting about the game.

Popular EA series like Need for Speed, and Battlefield can have a lot of Twitch and YouTube Live video members who stream the games for free because they love the game, and also make some money from Twitch and Patreon donations, and ads on YouTube.

Celebrities like sports players may also post screenshots and video clips of them playing new video games, so they can get more "likes" on social networks by posting about playing a new game.
