In a recent Fireside chat, EA executives spoke on how the Star Wars IP has been a huge success for the company and how it plans to “double down” on the franchise moving forward.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson responded on where he hopes the company will take Star Wars in the future by stating “Up is my hope–up and to the right. We have a tremendous relationship with Disney. We have a tremendous relationship with Lucas. We have a longstanding relationship with them going all the way back to Star Wars The Old Republic that we launched in 2011.”
Wilson stated that the revival of the Battlefront franchise has been one of the top-performers that has surfaced after the partnership with Disney. The games have gone to sell a combined 35 million copies according to Wilson.
Furthermore, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen stated that EA is going after a smaller market with its next title; Star Wars Squadrons. Wilson continued that even if the game doesn’t sell all to well, he will be happy with the breadth of titles that EA has been able to produce since the partnership with Disney and Lucas began.
“We’ve had success in first-person shooters, in RPGs, in action-adventure, in MMORPGs, in mobile, and I believe we’re going to have success with Squadrons as well. We’re going to double down on that partnership. Disney continues to be very very committed to the IP and to the canon.”
EA has had an absolute rollercoaster of Star Wars releases ever since they contained the license to make Star Wars titles. The internet went ablaze with rage when people learned about the use of microtransactions in Battlefront II before it was released. EA has also canned a few other titles that never got to see the light of day.
