Excellent news PlayStation trophy hunters, Sony will finally give you something back for endless hours of grinding.

Dubbed the Sony Rewards system, it now allows players to register their achievements in return for points that you can buy a PSN credit. Here is a break down:
  • 100 Silver trophies – 100 points
  • 25 Gold trophies – 250 points
  • 10 Platinum trophies – 1,000 points
So currently, 1k points gets you a $10 PSN credit, 2k gets you $20 in credit and 5k gets you $50 in credit with 999 points for one month of PSN+. The points can also be used to buy games as well.

Sadly this is only for USA residents at the time, most likely we are a testing market and I'm sure this will branch out to other regions. If you've got a lot, you're rich! If you have little like me, then this is meh.

What do you (@IntoxNitram @AidsorHIV ) folks think of this program? Don't forget, here at GL we offer our own points system to win free gaming stuff as well ;)

Not to hijack this topic, I would like to see Steam do something like this with our achievements etc. Although we can see our trading cards anyway though.

This can be a good idea for keep people playing games longer to collect many trophies.

I wonder if this is against the law in countries like the Philippines and South Korea who have banned online gambling, and casinos. Winning money or gift cards for winning a game or betting on a virtual game can be categorize as online gambling.

That a very good point. I wonder if this will stay "US" only because of that. If that the case then it would be sad to see others miss out (not that it would affect me).

I don't have a PlayStation, but this is awesome. This is what I wish Microsoft did back in the 360 era. I remember being an achievement hunter back when I first got an Xbox 360, but as soon as I found out that number didn't mean anything, I quit doing that because it was a waste of time. Though, if I ever get a PlayStation, I'll keep this in mind.

If they're introducing this then Sony need to crack down on those 'free trophy' shovelware games. They have removed some from their store already but wouldn't shock me if there were more.

Which would also mean no more bs trophies like, "Beat Chapter 1" or "Beat Chapter 2" or any of those other pointless achievements that you get just from story progression alone.

I think Sony does not want to risk PSN being banned in more conservative countries which has strict anti-gambling laws, and online gambling laws. Some countries like Thailand don't even let you own Playing Cards to play Poker, so rewarding gamers for trophies may be illegal, and cause PSN or the PS4 to be banned in stricter countries.

There is also tax and employment laws in other countries where Sony and the winner of the prize may have to pay income taxes. $10-50 US is a lot of money in poorer countries, so these countries may ask Sony and gamers to pay income tax for winning money or giftcard money value, or risk being fined by the government for not paying taxes.

A lot of work online sites also require parents permission to work online if the user is under 18 years old, or the parent to make an account for their kids, so they can work online. There is a chance of Sony breaking child working laws in some countries by letting children earn giftcard money for winning trophies which can be consider working online by paying users to earn money for collecting trophies.

Why does the USA always get the good stuff? Hopefully they bring it over to the UK soon. Microsoft have done this for quite a while (since the 360 actually) and they gave out surveys to earn points as well.

Looks like there is no points for bronze trophies, so everything can be thrown under that for anything easy/pointless.

It's cool enough. I like the idea, would like to see it go global. It's US only at the moment which means I can't use it here in the UK.

opps, forgot you are UK. I'm sure it will come over eventually.

I think they are going to quit it as soon as they realize how much cash they are giving away OR they will limit the gift card to certian(crappy) games.

Last year I earned around 150 silver trophies, 50 gold, and 15 plats.
