After a brief outage on day one, Musk’s v0.1 AI-powered encyclopedia is back online, drawing scrutiny and comparisons to Wikipedia.

Elon Musk’s much-anticipated AI-powered online encyclopedia, GrokPedia, officially launched on October 27, 2025. But hours after going live, the site went offline, only to return shortly thereafter. As of now, the platform boasts more than 885,000 articles.

GrokPedia’s landing page is minimalist: a dark background, a single large search bar, and font styling reminiscent of both Wikipedia and the Grok AI chatbot. The homepage itself says: “version v0.1”. For comparison: Wikipedia currently lists just over 7,081,705 articles in its English-language edition.

GrokPedia uses AI to manage, fact-check, and curate its content. Users cannot directly edit articles. Instead, there is a system for submitting corrections. The design mirrors Wikipedia in many ways, as each entry includes headings, subheadings, and citations.

Where does GrokPedia’s content come from?

The encyclopedia’s content is largely adapted from Wikipedia, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. However, the linking style is simpler, and in some cases, the text appears nearly identical. That duplication has sparked concerns from observers. Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, said:

“Wikipedia’s knowledge is – and always will be – human. Through open collaboration and consensus, people from all backgrounds build a neutral, living record of human understanding… even GrokPedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”

What’s Next, And What to Watch?

At this stage, GrokPedia is clearly in “early beta” mode. Version 0.1 suggests that Musk’s team at xAI sees plenty of work ahead. Musk himself described the project as a “necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”

That ambition, however, comes with risks. Some articles on GrokPedia have shown content that diverges from Wikipedia’s consensus view. For businesses and knowledge-seeking users, the launch highlights two clear opportunities:

1. A new source of structured information, which may evolve rapidly if xAI invests heavily in growth.

2. A reminder that independent verification remains important, especially when even “fact-checked” AI entries may reflect underlying biases or omissions.

Makes me fearful that this turns out like the phone game, keep passing information on and it's no longer what it started out as.
