Disney isn't just publishing Epic Mickey 2 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii - it's bringing its new franchise to the Nintendo 3DS as well. Contrary to some expectations, however, this sequel isn't just following up Warren Spector's first game, it's also serving as a sequel to the Sega Genesis classic, Castle of Illusion. Titled Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, the game is due alongside its console counterparts this fall, but is a completely original and unrelated experience.

Power of Illusion was first revealed in the latest issue of Nintendo Power. Developed by DreamRift (the developers behind Monster Tale), the game is a full platform adventure, complete with 2D animated sprites and layered backgrounds enhanced by the 3DS's 3D effects. Levels will pull from the full history of Disney, from Sleeping Beauty to Tangled.

Touch screen controls allow you to paint or erase into the game world by tracing shapes with the stylus. Precision matters here. According to the article, if you outline something like a cannon poorly, it might just harm Mickey. If you're skilled, it will only hurt your enemies. Sketchpad items will allow players to directly bring items into the game without the touch-based mechanic.

The vast history of Disney will be on display, not only from world designs inspired by films, but the characters Mickey meets on his adventure. Rescuing these animated icons will not only allow them to appear in Mickey's fortress headquarters, but open up side quests that can eventually yield in-game rewards. Ever wanted to help Uncle Scrooge recover his Lucky Dime? Power of Illusion will let you do that.
