This April, as junior high school students across Japan enter high school, a new type of specialty institution will open its doors. Dubbed “Esport High School” in English, the school is called Esports Koutou Gakuin (eスポーツ高等学院). Here is the school’s official site.

Esports high school is outfitted with 40 Galleria XA7C-R37 gaming PCs with an Intel Core i7-11700, and outfitted with Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 graphics cards. While the school’s site doesn’t list what exact games students will play, the genres listed are what you’d expect: FPS, Third-person shooter, RTS, and MOBA.

The teachers are esports players and industry types, who will provide their expertise to the high schoolers.

Students won’t just study video games, but also learn the standard Japanese high school curriculum. There is also an individual study program for those who have struggled with standard instruction.

The high school’s website lists an array of careers for future graduates, including VR creator, game writer, 3DCG designer, game designer, special effects creator, and programmer. Some of these choices might need further education at either a specialty school or university. Other career options include streamer and esports pro.

The school is supported by telecoms giant NTT’s esports outfit, as well as the esports team owned by Tokyo Verdy, the Japanese professional soccer team.

The School will open in the Spring while being located at Tokyo’s Shibuya area.

It could've been straightforward for me had it been I live in Japan to enroll into the E-sports school. I love gaming, learning about it in school would be greater, carving out a career there too, would be more greater.

I wish they would've selected more titles to play on that watchers would actually be interested in that they play other than this selection. Imagine playing Brawlhalla on those PC's and that would seem like overkill. Meanwhile, you got hyper-realistic shooters and such like who in their mind thinks moving a joystick to aim with really fine precision is fun and almost sounds like luck and positioning. No Pokemon Unite for these guys just LoL man I hope the students there don't get triggered so easily when reading the chat because I've heard a thing or two about that.

Where are the fighting games? Like that should be a staple of eSports.

fighting games do seem to be lacking these days.

Nick All-Star Brawl
Smash Bros.
Rivals of Aether
Pokken Tournament
Guilty Gear
Tekken
Upcoming MultiVersus
Mortal Kombat
Persona Arena/Under NiGHT/Blazblue

I know CrossTag Battle never got a good setup since its organizers for AnimeCon had Best out of 1 or some crazy ruleset in a game with combos to death. If it was done better it could get more fans. We need more than just a cult Smash following showing how fighters is crucial to the whole eSports shtick. I know there are games based on the team aspect but there can be games with say tag team of sorts but it's in the organizing rules that needs to give it proper support. I do have to say though aside from platform fighters I don't see teams as an aspect of fighting games being made.

most of those listed are like bad copy cats or fan service fighters. Where is the old days of Street figther where it was combos and not flashy moves?

After I found out stun length on certain hits was randomized I might think it was just all in good fun. I take it you mean anything but Street Fighter 1987 because I would learn a new game so it would get a better competitive scene. I didn't even mention Soulcalibur.
