Remember the little girl that Wii Fit called fat? Sure you do! Now, at least one expert is calling Nintendo out on using BMI to judge whether younger players are overweight or not. Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum is even calling for kiddos to be banned from Wii Fit. According to Fry:

I'm absolutely aghast that children are being told they are fat... BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used... A child's BMI can change every month and it is perfectly possible for a child to be stocky, yet still very fit... I would be very concerned if children were using this game and I believe it should carry a warning for parents.

Nintendo's response after the jump:

Nintendo would like to apologize to any customers offended by the in-game terminology used to classify a player's current BMI status, as part of the BMI measurement system integrated into Wii Fit.

Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development.

People take things way to seriously. Any good parent already knows whether their child is overweight or not. We don't need a video game to tell us that. Once I get it, I will be having Nathan play it, just so he can get an idea of what it's like to really do exercise and have an exercise regimen.

If the parents have a good relationship with their child, they can explain to their child that they don't need to worry about a video game (or anyone else for that matter) calling them fat.

Agreed. Nintendo is the only one right now (out of the main three) trying to do something about the inactivity of gamers.

I need to get Wii Fit so I can see what it says about Nathan and me, just for fun.

lol I won't get a Wiifit. why pay that money when I can go outside and exercise.

True, but it's more than just exercise. Some of it has to do with your balance and center of gravity. There is a belief that your center of gravity is off during certain things (like stress and illness). That's what I'm really interested in.

If children are banned from it, they are seriously going to loose some money. Who else is going to buy it besides a few adults?
