About ten minutes after the very first car alarm went off, the tech went from being a genuine theft deterrent to an annoyance that everyone just ignores. The makers of the Bike Mine have a better idea, at least when it comes to getting people to notice when a bike or motorcycle is being stolen: old-fashioned explosives.

Unlike an alarm system that can go off when someone just walks too close to a car, the Bike Mine works more like a booby trap. When a thief actually starts moving a motorcycle, bike, or what have you, it triggers an explosion generated by what’s known as a saluting blank—a shotgun shell without projectiles.

The Bike Mine starter kit, which includes the easy-to-attach rigging, titanium tripwire, and three blank shells, can be pre-ordered with a $70 donation to its $21,000+ Kickstarter campaign. Delivery is expected sometime in September, so you might want to hold off on buying a fancy new ride until you know it will be safe and secure. If you’re a terrible person, there’s also a lot of prank potential here, but don’t ask us for any ideas.

What do you think?

I think this could be a bad idea since someone will hear an explosion, and call the police reporting that there maybe a person with a gun, or a bomb outside.

The owner of the bike maybe arrested for starting an explosion or lighting firework which is illegal in most places.

I would think rigging an explosive to your stuff would be illegal.

I think it can be illegal to make loud noises in public as well. I imagine a sound of a explosion may start a stampede, and cause slower people like the elderly to be stomped on from a sudden rush of people who are running away from the explosion sound because they think there is a terrorist is attack which are becoming more common in places like Europe and North America.

That's like saying you're not allowed to shoot a person if you they attack you, provided that you have a license to carry a concealed firearm because it would scare other people around you. That is the point: alarming people about the fact that there is a dangerous person in proximity.

I dunno how things are in the US, but the inventor is from the UK and he checked the laws before designing it. It's perfectly legal to use as long as it's made for protection purposes.

I think it is best to ask your local police before buying this bike alarm. I'm kind of afraid the sudden sound of an explosion may cause people to run very quickly away from the sound and stomp on people who can't run as fast, or a person with a concealed gun to accidentally shot someone because they heard a gun shot from their direction, and they did not double check to see if there is a person who had a gun or explosive device before shooting the person.

We have people here in the states known as soccer moms who would never let their of their family carry around any kind of explosives.

There are also people who sue companies for money because of personal injuries, and emotional problems caused by a product.

I bet, people will sue this company for hearing loss since explosives can be very loud. There is always a possibility of someone leaning over, or a short person like kids and toddlers standing close to an exploding bike alarm, and gets their ear drums damage by the loud sound of an explosion.

The smoke from an explosion is not good to breathe in, so it may cause an asthma attack, or breathing and health problems in people's latter years if there is too much smoke from many exploding bike alarms which pollute the air.
