A portion of Facebook’s significant user base is comprised of people from developing nations, and Quartz has taken a look at the ways the social network coaxed them to the platform. Facebook’s goal has been to make its social network synonymous with the internet, ensuring it was accessible across the entire spectrum of mobile phones.

Usage in regions like Africa and the Philippines has spiked as a result of the low barrier to entry, paving the way for a transition to the full mobile Facebook interface on cheap smartphones in the future.

I guest this is better then AOL version of the internet when people thought AOL was the internet because AOL provided e-mail, dial-up internet, and lots of content for people to read in the 90s.

It kind of sounds like Facebook wants internet users to move to Facebook for all or most of their internet needs like search, chat, e-mail, etc.

I think that this is opportunistic and a very bad idea because considering how Facebook's founder doesn't believe in privacy, this means that these people could be unknowingly sharing their private info which could end up with their lives in danger.

Under-developed nations usually go hand in hand with political unrest which is usually the result of corruption and military control and so, I really don't see things ending well for them seeing as how users of FB and Twitter and their families have ended up dead because of something they posted online.

I bet that this is yet another thing that Zuckerberg doesn't give a flying fuck about whenever he is spouting off his bullshit about 'the age of privacy being over.' I can see this happening on a much larger scale.

I can not say this is a good idea. I don't believe facebook should hold that much power.

This may not be the best idea, but it means more people can use the "Facebook Internet" instead of no internet because they are too poor to go online or to afford a Data plan for their basic cell phone, and the Facebook Internet is free or cheap, so more people can use it to stay in touch with friends, families, and their community.

Facebook can make their Facebook internet be on a lot of cell phones, tablets, and other devices worldwide since it uses SIM cards with Facebook pre-installed on it which users can use to access Facebook without having to pay for a Data plan or extra charges. Facebook just need to make a deal with companies like ATT, Verizon, Sprint which provide internet and voice call via cellular technology.

Through a series of canny partnerships, acquisitions, and roll-outs, Facebook has made its service usable for anyone, whether they’re using the latest iPhone or a five year old gray-market Nokia with a black and white screen. In many cases, users don’t even have to have a data plan.

On the cheapest phones, of which there are a billion or more in the developing world, Facebook can now be accessed at little or no cost in at least two ways.

I think Facebook Sim cards and cell phones will someday be on a lot of cell phones in the US, and other fully develop countries since a lot of people might want free access to Facebook even if you do not have a data plan on your cell phone which can save the typical user 20 or more dollars a month if they just plan on using their phone or tablet for Facebook since it is free or cheap.

Sim cards are probably the simplest way to connect flip phones to Facebook for free/cheap since a lot of flip phones don't have a lot of storage, or no storage for apps.

Google is the most popular search engine.

But, Facebook is still the largest social network with now 1 billion active users.
