I like top loading disc trays like the disc tray for the Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS2 Slim, etc since they are easy to use, and they don't fail too often since the tray does not rely on motors, gears, pulleys, and other moving parts which can fail or jammed like slot loading, and front tray loading disc trays.

Plus, if your console breaks, you can easily remove your game by just pressing the open door button to lift out your game disc. The console does not even need to be on to remove the disc since the door uses a spring to open the disc tray.

I kind of like the fat PS2's disk tray, but I can see it being a problem if the motor which opened it failed.

That's a good point about top loading trays making it easier to retrieve discs, but I prefer slot loading for the coolness factor.

(And actually, the tray is what's broken on my Gamecube, lol. It won't stay down.

Personally, I do not like disk treys. I like when the system does everything for you. The PS3 is so much easier to use and you do not run the risk of scratching the disk before you insert it. I feel as though inserting a disk into a slot is much easier to handle. What is the trey like in the PS2 slim? I have not used or even seen a slim before.
