The FCC has added Kaspersky, China Mobile, and China Telecom to the list of companies affected by the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019.

The so-called Covered List includes companies "that are deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the security and safety of United States persons," the commission explains, typically because of their connections to foreign governments.

The addition of Kaspersky, China Mobile, and China Telecom nearly doubles the number of companies on the Covered List. The FCC's initial list included five companies—Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua—when it was formally announced in March 2021.

I still remember working retail the last time they were deem to be bad and pulled all their product off of the shelf.

I guess this latest notice is just because it is Russian software, bad time to be anything Russian.

The threat of malware is still there, just not to the extent of Windows based machines. There’s also the browser based threats as well. They have Malwarebytes for MacOS, which is what I use on my Macs.

You have to really get into the thick of the dark night to catch anything on macs. But yeah, wouldn't hurt to run a malware scan.

Doing this has made me feel even better about having a Macbook Pro. I imagine if I ever did upgrade in the future I will be choosing the latest model. Fingers crossed that I have at least a couple of years before I have to do that.
